Three volumes in one, pp. 202, 223, 144. Six plates (from an earlier edition?). Vol. 3 is on different paper and is imprinted 'Washington: Ed. Rosenbaum,' n.d. (but 1865). P.C. 31.h.13.

The history of this work is rather complicated. The first two volumes were published originally about 1852 at Altona by August Prinz. The paginations and imprint were the same as the present edition with the exception that no date of publication was shown on the titlepages. About 1854, Schieble of Stuttgart produced his edition, adding the date '1850' to the imprint. Volume 3 first appeared about 1860, again with the same imprint as the present volume but with the place of publication misspelled Waschington.' The second edition of volume 3 appeared, as shown above, in 1865. The Schieble edition of volumes 1 and 2 had four plates, but the first edition had six which I think are those in the present copy. Hayn f Gotendorf (vol. 8, p. 98) describe these six plates as schlechten (en: bad, or rotten), which I personally feel to be rather unfair.

"A Crocodile of Choirboys" is a remarkable first novel written while the author, whose real name it is that appears on the titlepage, was still at University in England. The subject-matter which is rather strong and, in places, extremely violent, caused all the English publishers who were approached with the manucript to reject it; hence its appearance here, issued by a rather dubious American concern. See quotation in Times Literary Supplement (12 September 1980) page 1003, col. 3/bottom, from the extraordinary pederastic opening text.

This peculiar book is a list of women the author claims to have employed in various capacities, together with notes on their peculiarities, tastes and so forth. The author provides 'An Explanation' : 'My business is hiring out women to model dresses, pose for artists, and make with the torso at expensive dinner-parties where all the guests are men and few of them are any damn good. I keep two card-indexes of the girls who work for me. A 3" x 5" card for such vital employment information as the young lady's name, address, telephone and social security number, her measurements and the modeling she is best suited for. On a much larger card I keep a record of those of my models with whom I have achieved intimacy. Here I record if she was any good when she reached me and how it happened if she wasen't (sic). I compare her relations with other men to her relations with me. I record why she left me and what became of her. It is of the information on these larger cards that this book was composed.' The book is anonymous, but the author's name is given in a Ms note at the top left-hand corner of the front paste-down endpaper by G. Legman, who notes also that the work was banned in USA by legal action.
