It was my privilege to see a copy of this curious performance in the possession of Mr. Timothy d'Arch-Smith that is interleaved throughout with the original typescript and which includes variations from, and additions to, the printed version. A typed note in the book indicates that Mr. d'Arch-Smith's copy is one of two containing the original typescript. The note continues: 'The sonnets contained in this Volume were written by a highly-placed Government Official, noted even among members of that class, for his rigidly austere, and even repellent manner towards his colleagues and subordinates and the public who came into contact with him.' To the lady to whom the poems are addressed, the anonymous author writes a letter printed at the end of the book: `There is really no reason why one should not write describing nuptial play, if one can make the description a private possession of beauty and significance.'
