No. 26 of 700 copies. No. 8 in the series Der Venuswagen. This poem, published originally in 1773, is Heinse's revised and completed version of an apparently abortive attempt by an author named Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim to rework Claude Joseph Dorat's Les Cerises (1768). Dorat's verses were themselves inspired by an earlier source, the Moyen de parvenir (1610) of François Béroalde de Verville. (14 April 1923.) P.C. 30.1.2/8.

889. [HEMPSTEAD, Charles Edward.] An Introduction to the Study of the Psychology and Physiology and Bio-Chemistry of The Sexual Impulse among Adults in Mental and Bodily Health. London: B0risw0od (1935). 8vo. pp. xiii 3o6. Three folding tables, and several monochrome line drawings of the male and female sex organs. Publisher's cream cloth, printed in red. (27 March 1935.) P.C. 20.b.26. (Orig. Cup.364.f.8. and s.s. A.408.).

Published under the pseudonym of `Edward Charles,' The Sexual Impulse was the subject of an action for obscene libel in 1935 and suppressed. A note to this effect, hand-written on a BL compliments slip, has been inserted between the free endpaper and the half title. Another book suppressed during the course of the same action, entitled The German Prisoner, will be found entered in this handlist under the name of its author, James Hanley.

890. HERBERT, (George), Lord, pseud. A Night in a Moorish Harem .. . Introduction by James E. White, Ph.D. North Hollywood, Calif.: Brandon House (1967). 8vo. pp. 160. Illustrated with reproductions of Victorian and Edwardian galante lithographs. Original pictorial wrappers preserved. (31 October 1969.) P.C. 23.a.36.

The publishing company responsible for this volume was managed by Milton Luros. A Night in a Moorish Harem was first published about 1900, probably at Paris. Three other modern reprints have come to my attention. The first, published at New York (?) by Mayfair House Classics in 1968, is titled An Arabian Night by `Lord Henry L. Flemming.' The second, with the title and authorship the same as the edition under notice, appears to originate from Scandinavia; a blurb on the front cover gives: `This edition is not to be sold outside Scandinavia. Export not allowed.' It carries no other identification, but seems to be of about the same date as the "Lord Flemming" version. Both editions are typographically identical, and both have pp. 125. One is presumably a photo-reprint of the other, but which appeared first I am unable to determine. Another edition is advertised at the conclusion of Flossie, a Venus of Fifteen (Copenhagen: Obelisk A-S, 1967), q.v. that title in this handlist. The third edition I have examined is printed together with The Lustful Turk in a volume entitled The Harem Omnibus, published by Holloway House of Los Angeles about 1968.

891 HIC ET HEC, ou l'Art de varier les plaisirs de l'amour et de la volupté, enseigné par les R. P. Jésuites et leurs élèves. Avec dix gravures. Tome Premier (- Second). Londres: 1788. Page 206 HILARIA

892. (Another edition.) Hic et Hec ... Tome Premier (- Second). Londres (Brussels) : chez tous les Marchands de nouveautés, 1870. 121110. Two vols. pp. 78, 94. (5 May 1886.) P.C. 27.b.6.

893. (Hic et Hec, etc.) Hot-en-Haar, of de Geheele ... Winkel. Rotterdam: Artistiek-Bureau. (c. 1895.) 8vo. pp. 139. Cloth-backed boards, with original yellow wrappers, printed in black, laid down. Hic et Hec has been ascribed, probably in error, to Mirabeau. (10 November 1900.) P.C. 30.i.31.

894. HILARIA. The Festive Board. London: Printed for the Author, 1798. 8vo. pp. vii + 158. Portrait. Ex-libris H. S. Ashbee. (10 November 1900.) P.C. 18.a.9.

895. (Another copy.) Hilaria. The Festive Board. London: Printed for the Author, 1798. 8vo. pp. vii + 158. Portrait. P.C. 21.a.14.

The authorship of Hilaria is uncertain. The revised edition of Halkett & Laing (1928, vol. 3, p. 38) gives the name of Captain Morris, presumably the same Captain Charles Morris who was friendly with the Prince of Wales and who is credited with the authorship of an obscene poem entitled The Plenipotentiary (c. 1788). However, Ashbee, in a Ms note in his own copy of Gay (2nd ed., 1864), asserts that Hilaria is from the pen of William Hewerdine.

900. HISTOIRES D'HOMMES ET DE DAMES. Frontispiece l'eau-forte. (Paris: ?Chevrel.) 1913. 8vo. pp. 142. Etched frontispiece. Limited to 600 copies, of which this is no. 143 of 500 on vergé â la forme. Dawes Bequest. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.c.4.

According to G. Legman ([["The Horn Book]]," p. 480) this rather handsome little collection of erotic jests, riddles and charades was edited by Louis Perceau, and the frontispiece, which is very good, is by Lobel-Riche.
