copies. Dawes Bequest. The name of the printer is given falsely in the colophon of vol. 2 as "Smithson Brothers ... Manchester." The beginning of the text of each volume is headed "Queenie," the name by which the heroine is known. A sequel, entitled Clara Alcock, is announced. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.d.9.

The Adventures of Lady Harpur would appear to be an expanded version of a work entitled Queenie, her Life of Free Enjoyment and Ecstatic Love Adventures which Ashbee notes as being "now in the course of publication" in 1885. (See: Ashbee, vol. 3, p. xxxiii, note.) C. R.. Dawes states that this was reprinted at Paris, in one volume of 144 pages, and that it contains only about the first quarter of Lady Harpur. He does not give a date for this edition. (See: Dawes, p. 265.) Dawes implies (the passage is somewhat ambiguous) that Régine is a translation of a part of Lady Harpur, but it seems more probable that it is a straight translation of the Paris reprint of Queenie that he mentions, since the second edition, published in 1907, as quoted by Perceau is entitled Régine (Queenie), ou les Adventures d'une fillette aux Antilles, and the title of the fourth edition (1923) again as noted by Perceau and, indeed, by Dawes himself, includes the words "traduit du roman américain Queenie (Petite Reine)." It is interesting to note that Régine has been re-translated into English by Howard Nelson, and published by Holloway House of Los Angeles, Calif., in 1972.

10. ALBUM DIABOLICO. (n.p., c. 1890?) Oblong 8vo. Not paginated. Limp blue cloth, in a cloth-covered case. This album comprises twelve obscene plates, including the title, depicting the devil and his attendant imps in various grotesque and bizarre poses with humans. Several of the plates, which are coloured, display a marked anti-clerical tendency. There is no text. (Io February 1951.) P.C. 15.aa.43

Les Aphrodites has been partially translated by James Campbell Reddie as The Aphrodites; or Fragments of the History of Pleasure, and was published in William Dugdale's semi-erotic periodical The Exquisite (London, 1842-44). A more complete translation was done by Howard Nelson and published in 1971 by Holloway House of Los Angeles.

Félicia has been translated into English at least twice. It appeared under the title Felicia or the Follies of my Life in the pages of The Exquisite (London, 1842-44) where it was translated by James Campbell Reddie. The second translation, by Gilson MacCormack, was published c. 1930 by the Librarie "Astra," Paris, under the title Felicia or My youthful Follies. A copy of this latter version is pressmarked Enfer I105 in the Bibliothèque Nationale.

A reprint of the lesbian-slanted first part of The Marchioness's Amorous Pastimes, with new material added to enlarge the text by Miss Lynn Barber, an associate editor of Penthouse magazine, was published clandestinely at London in March 1974 by Heinrich Hanau and printed by the RBW Press of Bishops Stortford. The production was based on a German photo-book issued earlier, c. 1972, by Stephenson Verlag under the title Lesbische Liebe im Lustschloss. The English edition reverts

to the title of the French original, La Matinée libertine, and retains most of the photographs of the German edition, which are by Main Leonard. La Matinée libertine has been ascribed, incorrectly, to Simon-Pierre Mérard de Saint-Just (1749-1812).

Concerning Apollinaire's alleged authorship of this small collection of erotic verse, Marcel Adéma has the following to say: "It is ... very improbable that this work is really by Apollinaire, it is probably a very clever pastiche. A poet, and friend of F. Fleuret, M. R. V., had occasion to see the dedication of a copy given by Fleuret to Pascal Pia, which leaves no doubt on the matter." (Adéma, Apollinaire, London, 1954, p. 288.) According to G. Legman this `charming forgery' is in fact by Pascal Pia, who when asked by Mr Legman point blank if he would indicate which parts he had written and which, if any, were the authentic work of Pia's former friend, Apollinaire, replied urbanely: `My dear young friend, we must leave something for the Ph.D.'s (agrégés) of the future!'

Irène was first published at Paris in 1928 under the title Le Con d'Irène by René Bonnel. A description of this first edition is noticed by Louis Perceau, who provides the details from the copy in his own collection. (See: Perceau, 342.) A clandestine reprint was issued in 1953, and in 1962 Claude Tchou published an edition illustrated by Hans Bellmer and carrying a preface by André Pieyre de Mandiargues for the Cercle du livre precieux. (Copy in the Enfer no. 1616.) An English translation by Lowell Bair, which included translations of the Pauvert and Pieyre de Mandiargues prefaces to the French editions of 1962 and 1968, was published by Grove Press at New York in 1969.

J. C. Reddie (Bibliographical Notes) mentions what would appear to be three English editions of Thérèse Philosophe. The first, although the more recent of the three, he describes more fully than the others because he was presumably the translator of it and knew the publisher well :-The Philosophical Theresa or Memoirs of a gay Girl. London, n.d. (William Dugdale, c. 1860.) 8vo. Two vols. pp. 77; 61. Sixteen lithographs. It is possible that this edition is a reprint or an expanded version of the translation published by Dugdale in his periodical The Exquisite (London: 1842-44) when it appeared as Philosophy for the Ladies; or the History of Father Girrad and Madame Eradice (sic). This was almost certainly translated by Reddie, as attested by his close friend H. S. Ashbee. (See: Ashbee, vol. 3, pp. 341-342.) Ashbee himself briefly notices this Dugdale edition in the course of his annotations to his own copy of the second edition of Gay (1864), now preserved in the BL. He

gives the price as £3.3s. The other two editions cited by Reddie are both entitled The Philosophical Theresa. The first is imprinted "Dublin" without date (but c. 1800) and is in 8vo. with illustrations. The second is without place or date, but has six engravings.

A new translation, by H. F. Smith, was published in 1970 by Grove Press at New York under the title Therese the Philosopher. It is an 8vo. of pp. xvi. 138. The authorship of this celebrated libertine romance, which was much admired by Sade and who himself ascribed it to d'Argens in Juliette (N.Y.: Grove Press, 1968, p. 462), has never been conclusively established. The Marquis d'Argens is, however, usually credited with its composition and for this reason appears under his name in this handlist. Thérèse Philosophe has erroneously been ascribed to other authors, most notably Arles de Montigny and Diderot. See note on No. 124, ante.

Both Histoire d'O and Retour n Roissy, together with their English versions, were published under the pseudonym "Pauline Réage." Dominique Aury, the person usually credited with the authorship of both works, was Jean Paulhan's secretary. The history of the Olympia Press translation of Histoire d'O is rather interesting. The translation first published by them in 1954 is quite different to the version they published in 1957 under the title The Wisdom of the Lash as part of their Traveller's Companion series. The earlier of the two was translated by Baird Bryant in collaboration with his wife, Denny. Maurice Girodias, proprietor of the Olympia Press, was not entirely satisfied with this and for the 1957 reprint he had the translation revised, possibly by Austryn Wainhouse. This latter version has been the one used for all subsequent editions and reprints, except for that published by Grove Press at New York which is a completely new translation. Baird Bryant, under the pseudonym "Willie Baron," wrote a novel for the

Traveller's Companion series entitled Play this Love With Me (1955) ; his wife, Denny, using the pseudonym "Winifred Drake," also wrote a novel for the same series entitled Tender was my Flesh (1955).

The Autobiography of a Flea is, besides John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, probably the most frequently reprinted work of English pornographic fiction. At least three modern editions exist, all pocketbooks, which I have seen. The first, a totally anonymous performance of 188 pages, was printed in London about 1968. It shares its black and red covers with a work entitled Lady Pokingham, reprinted without credit from The Pearl (London, 1879-8o). Both these works are heavily expurgated despite claims to the contrary on the front wrapper, and may possibly have been issued by a concern called Ben's Books who specialised in "soft" pornography and magazines devoted to flagellation.

The second is an unexpurgated edition produced in imitation of the Olympia Press's Traveller's Companion series, except that in this instance the wrappers are red rather than the customary green. I am reliably informed that this is one of many such forgeries published in London around 1960. It is rather fancifully priced at "Francs: 29.90" on the back wrapper. Finally, an edition published openly in the United States in 1967 by Greenleaf Classics of San Diego, California. It is unexpurgated and is graced by a preface credited to Leonard A. Lowag, Ph.D. In addition to the above, I have seen advertisements for two other American editions, one by Pendulum Books of Atlanta and the other by Collectors Publications of City of Industry, California.

Both were published about 1967-8 and to judge from other books I have examined from the same publishers they are probably unexpurgated. There is a French translation: Les Souvenirs d'une puce. (Amsterdam et Paris: 1890. 2 vols.)

As with most books of this sort, the question of authorship can only be a matter of speculation. However, added to a notice of a copy of the first edition in the catalogue of the Galitzin collection is (in translation) the following interesting piece of information: "This book, one of the most erotic in the English language, is very well written and was composed by an English barrister (avocat), well known in London." (Galitzin, 577.) It would be interesting to speculate that this refers to the same barrister who is credited in l'Enfer (nos. 819, 20) with the authorship of Gynecocracy, a remarkable "domination" novel in three volumes published at London in 1893, possibly by Leonard Smithers, which has also been attributed to Havelock Ellis. In the Enfer notice,

this barrister is identified as "M. St.n.sl.s de R.des," and it should be mentioned that the name Stanislas de Rhodes occurs in the London Law Lists for the period during which both The Autobiography of a Flea and Gynecocracy were published.
