The first edition of this novel, which was entitled Confession générale du chevalier de Wilfort, is usually dated 1758. However, the BL have an edition with imprint `Leipsik: 1755' (pressmark: 1094.d.6.) and another copy of this, listed in Galitzin (385), is described as the original edition. The BL also possess a reprint done at Brussels in 1882 by Gay et Doucé, entitled Les Leçons de la volupté ou Confession générale du chevalier de Wilfort (pressmark: 1609/6055) and what would appear to be a Dutch version called Lessen in den wellust, of Generale beicht ... P.C. 30.b.38.

This work is noticed in Poulet Malassis's own periodical, die Bulletin Trimestriel for 15 November 1867. Cléder, `bibliophile parisien, mort récemment.'

volume, collected together by the publishers, with a title page and introduction, and sold of cheaply at So centimes. The address given on the wrapper is Librairie Patriotique, 148 rue Montmartre.

1001. LESBOS, (Georges de), pseud. "Chaudes saturnales". Alger: chez la belle Fathma, 1893. 8vo. pp. 232. Dawes Bequest. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.c.6.

This would seem to be the first edition; Perceau (132:1), who was unable to see a copy, reproduces the title, imprint and publication date from a clandestine catalogue. The only difference between the title etc., as quoted by Perceau and the book itself, is that in Perceau's entry the words `2e édition revue et corrigée' are inserted between the name of the author and the place of publication. All that is required to complete Perceau's entry is to add that on the titlepage there is a device showing the heads of a faun and a woman, kissing, surrounded by a banderole without inscription.

1002. LESBOS, (Georges de). "Joyeuses enfilades" ... Amsterdam: 1895. 8vo. pp. 175. Dawes Bequest. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.d.1O.

1003. LESBOS, (Georges de). "Voluptés bizarres". Roman érotique. Amsterdam: 1893. (1898?) 8vo. pp. 93. P.C. 3o.h.10.

Perceau (131:2) lists what seems to be this edition, but there is a discrepancy in the paginations; the text of the present volume concludes at p. 93, the reverse being blank. Perceau gives the following: `Un vol. de 89 pp. (Page 90 blanche).'

1004. LESCARO, (Michael), pseud? "The Loves of Antonio d'Angolo." San Diego, Calif.: Greenleaf Classics (1967). 8vo. pp. 176. Original wrappers preserved. (30 April 1973.) P.C. 28.aa.2.

Page 223 LETTRES DE JULIE

Ashbee (vol. 3, pp. 189-190) in noticing Letters from a Friend in Paris says nothing which contradicts the place and date of publication as given on the titiepage; this suggests that they are correct. The work was certainly printed prior to 1877, since it is briefly mentioned by Ashbee in the first volume of his bibliography which was published during that year. (p. liv. note 82.) A pencil note in the present copy (not by Ashbee) proposes that the publisher was Edward Avery, but I am inclined to disagree, since the date, 1874, if correct, is almost certainly too early to allow it to be one of his productions.

1009. LETTERS FROM LAURA AND EVELINE giving an account of their Mock-Marriage, Wedding-Trip etc. Published as an appendix to the Sins of the Cities. London (?Paris:) 1903. 8vo. pp. 123. Dawes Bequest. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.c.11.

This is a reprint; the first edition was published at London in 1883, and Ashbee (vol. 3, p. 403) states that it was written by its original publisher, whom he does not identify. The work to which this is an appendix or sequel will be found in this handlist entered under its title, The Sins of the Cities of the Plains.

1010. "LETTRES AMOUREUSES D'UN FRÈRE Â SON ÉLÈVE." Alexandrie. (Brussels: Gay, 1878.) 12mo. pp. 219. No. I19 of 450 on papier vélin. Ex-libris C. R. Dawes. Dawes Bequest. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.c. io.

1012. (Another edition.) "Lettres d'un ignorantin â son élève." Paris: Librairie Anti-Cléricale, 1884. 8vo. pp. 168 ± 8 of Catalogue. Original yellow wrappers, printed ill black, preserved. The text of Lettres d'un ignorantin concludes at p. 148; the remaining pages are taken up with a short work entitled Le Cantique des cantiques. (3 February 1886.) P.C. 27.a.22.

1013. "LETTRES DE JULIE Â EULALIE," ou "Tableau du libertinage" de Paris. A. Londres: chez Jean Nourse, 1784. 8vo. pp. 175. Imperfect; wanting pp. 119-122. P.C. 30.g.27.

1014. (Another edition, with additional material.) "Ma Conversion." A Stamboul: de l'imprimerie des Odalisques, 1783. (1784.) 12mo. pp. 191. P.C. 3o.g.21. In this version, the letters are between Hortense and Rémonde; also, the text, which in the earlier edition concludes with the letter dated 4 May 1783, is expanded to include 16 new letters, the last being dated 12 January 1784. A greatly enlarged third edition of this work, entitled Correspondance d'Eulalie, ou Tableau de libertinage de Paris (Londres: Jean Nourse, 1785. 2 vols. in-12mo) is in the BL at pressmark 012550.de.73.

Page 224 LETTRES GALANTES

Manuel de civilité has been translated into English twice, to my knowledge: I have before me "A Handbook of Good Manners for Little Girls" (N.Y.: Grove Press, 1971) and "An Erotic Manuel of Etiquette for Little Girls" (Los Angeles: Avanti Art Editions, 1972). This latter version presents the English and French texts on facing pages, and includes the illustrations to the `Londres' edition, noticed above, reproduced in monochrome.

1063. "(Trois filles de leur mère The She-Devils (by)" Peter Lewys. Paris: Ophelia Press (1958). 8vo. pp. 266. Original pale salmon wrappers, printed in black, preserved. The translation has been ascribed to Richard Seaver and Norman Rubington. (30 January 1964.) P.C. 14.g.22.

1064. "(Trois filles de leur mère.)" "Three Sisters and their Mother." Translated by Harold Norman. With an Introduction by Maurice Gloser, Ph.D. Los Angeles, Calif.: Holloway House (1969). 8vo. pp. 247 + (vii) of advertisements. Original wrappers preserved. Gloser's Introduction argues strongly against Pierre Louis being the author of this work, leaving the purpose of its republication obscure. (30 April 1973.) P.C. 28.aa.9.

A third English edition of "Trois filles de leur mère" was published in New York in 1969 by Grove Press. The translation was credited to `S. d'E.', presumably `Sabine d'Estrée who was also responsible for translating the Grove Press edition of Louys's Manuel de civilité. This edition, which is entitled "Mother's Three Daughters", is interesting in that it includes specimen pages of the facsimile Ms edition of 1926; while, acting as a frontispiece, it reproduces the titlepage of French edition with imprint `A l'enseigne du chat pour chat, 1897 (c. 1935?), a copy of which is described in La Léonina, pp. 88-89.

A rather unusual modern French-language edition of this work has also come to my attention. Under the title "Trois filles et (sic) leur mère", it was issued in 1972 by Publications Avant Gardists Inc., of Casier Postal 21, Succursale Victoria, Montréal, Québec, Canada. In appearance, this volume is hardly different from the many pornographic effusions issuing from the United States in English; indeed, from the advertisements at the end of the book, listing such works as Prisonnière de la Gestapo - (`Pour oublier les tortures des nazis, l'amour est un merveilleux remède') - there is little to tell them apart. It is, however, the first publication of its sort that I have seen of Canadian origin and for this reason seems worthy of mention. See also the note on Les Véritables chansons de Bilitis (1937), at no. 1826 post.

1065. "LOVE AND SAFETY," or, "Love and Lasciviousness with Safety and Secrecy". A Lecture delivered with practical Illustrations by the Empress of Asturia (The Modern Sappho) ; assisted by her favourite Lizette and Others. London-New York: The Erotica Biblion Society (Paris: ?Carrington), 1908. 8vo. pp. 160. Original blue-grey wrappers, printed in red and black, preserved. The imprint is false; printed at Paris. The text of "Love and Safety" concludes at p. 130, and the rest of the volume is taken up with a text of "Only a Boy", which has been firmly ascribed to Eugene Field. The back wrapper carries advertisements for the following works : The Autobiography of a Flea - Flossie. - The Horn Book. - Love and Safety. - Maidenhead Stories. - "The Memoirs of Dolly Morton". - Memoirs of the Celebrated Fanny Hill. - School Life in Paris. (30 June 1968.) P.C. 26.C.9.

Love and Safety would seem to be a translation of part of a French work entitled Instruction libertine. This was probably circulated in Nis copies during the 186o's, before being published in part only by J. P. Blanche at Brussels in 1870. This published portion, itself of extreme rarity being issued in just so copies (BL copy: Cup. 363.d.58.), was later translated as The Horn Book and published in 1898. The unpublished portion of the French original appeared, in English as Love and Safety, at about the same time and from the same publisher. The complicated history of this work is explored thoroughly in the title essay of Mr. G. Legman's "The Horn Book" (New York, 1964, pp. 46-70). Love and Safety was reprinted in 1968 by Greenleaf Classics Inc. of San Diego, Calfornia.

Apart from differences in the first page of text, this is the same novel as "Business as Usual" which was published at the same time. A copy will be found entered in this catalogue under the pseudonymous name of the author, 'Soliman Peters.'
