The following manuscript note by H. S. Ashbee is appended to the entry for the first édition of this work in his own working copy of Index Librorum Prohibitorum, preserved in the Private Case: “The correct names of the authors, or actors in L'École des Biches are, Duponchel, Bégis, Hankey.

“At p. 134 of his Cat. des ouvrages & c. condamnés M. F. Drujon supposes that Baroche was an assistant in its composition; but this is not the case; Duponchel was the real author of the work, and Baroche had nothing whatever to do with it. Bégis and Hankey made suggestions, but the book was chiefly written from the dictation of Duponchel by one of the ladies who figure in it, in the apartments of Hankey.

“The women are, Massin the well-known actress, Drémont of the Palais Royal Theatre, since married to a banker, and a femme de chambre.

“The above information was given me by F. Hankey himself in London, March 21, 1878.

“L'École des biches is noticed in Le Livre, No. for April 1880, p. 312." There are at least two English versions of L'École des biches; the first, translated by “L. E. LaBan," appeared in 1967, published by Brandon House of North Hollywood, California. The second was published by Holloway House of Los Angeles in 1971 and translated by Howard Nelson.
