Bust of Sappho

Sappho was a Greek poetess from the island of Lesbos, who was widely regarded in ancient times are the best poet Greece had produced. Some of her poems involved warm sentiments toward women, and she acquired a reputation for what is now called, from her birthplace, Lesbianism. This reputation was cited by the early Church as the reason for especially searching out and destroying copies of her work. Today, only a few fragments are known, and only her reputation survives.
