Inserted is a note from the editor, who signs himself `ED,' to Winkley. The note is written on the reverse of an announcement for the book. (6 October 1951.) P.C. 15.c.35.

The following information on this volume is taken from Mr. Timothy d'Arch-Smith's Love in Earnest (1970, p. 159 note 67); `The book seems to have been edited by a poet calling himself Edmund Edwinson. There is a note signed "ED" to the Rev. Alfred Reginald Thorold Winkley, describing the production of the book, tipped in to Winkley's copy now in the British Museum at press mark P.C. 15.c.35.' Later Mr. d'Arch-Smith suggests that Edwinson's real name may be Reginald Bancroft Cooke (op. cit., p. 245). However, following the publication of Love in Earnest Mr. d'Arch-Smith discovered that the editor of Men and Boys was in fact Edward Mark Slocum, as he reveals in an excellent catalogue of English homosexual poetry offered for sale in 1972 by Michael de Hartington, Booksellers, of London.

This is one of two editions of Le Rideau Levé to be published in 1864, probably by the same publisher. The other has the same title and impress and is in-12mo., but has pp. 271. The present edition is possibly a reprint of the other since in this version the word ajoute in the title is spelled correctly, whereas in the other edition it is spelled ajouta.

P.C. 27.a.46.

In his Notice to this edition, 'Helpey' (i.e., Louis Perceau) defends the ascription of this novel to Mirabeau. Both Ma conversion and Le Rideau levé appeared in new English translations in 1972 and were printed together in the same volume, as The Libertine of Quality and The Lifted Curtain by Holloway House of Los Angeles. The translations were by Howard Nelson.

Only (Charles Carrington?), 1904. 8vo. Three volumes. pp. 108, 130, 160. Dawes Bequest. (13 June 1964.) P.C. 13.d.15.

This work was reprinted about 1969 by Grove Press at New York. The text is an expanded version of the following work.

1225. ("The Modern Eveline." Original version.) Eveline. Aventures et Intrigues d'une jeune Miss du grande monde. Paris: chez tores les marchands de nouveautés, 1907. 8vo. pp. 174. (30 January 1964.) P.C. 14.11.53.

The history of this work is rather obscure. Ashbee (vol. 3, pp. 142-144) notices an edition dated c. 1840; but this is not the original, the title of which, he believed, was Evelina. Ide also notes two other reprints, dated c. 1843 and c. 1860. To judge from Ashbee's synopsis, the French version above is a straight translation of the text he notices, whereas the English edition of 1904 in 3 vols. is a greatly expanded version.

  • MOMAS, (Alphonse).

According to articles by Martial Beauvais in the Dictionnaire des oeuvres érotiques (pp. 106/7; 329/30), Alphonse Momas was the evil genius behind an enormous volume of written-to-order pornography published first in Holland, then in France by the Briffauts, between c. 1890-1924. Beauvais identifies Momas only in connection with two pseudonyms, 'Tap-Tap' and the better-known 'Le Nismois'; but in the course of his Bibliographic, Louis Perceau lists a number of other pseudonyms of the same writer, most of which will be found represented in the entries that follow. Little seems to be known of Momas, other than his occupation, which was that of a civil servant attached to the police (préfecture de la Seine), and that towards the end of his life he took an interest in spiritualism (se consacrait au spiritisme). The entries for works by Momas arc arranged alphabetically according to pseudonym, concluding with two anonymous novels. The pseudonyms are as follows: A. Cain d'Abel. - B. L'Erotin. - c. Fuckwell. - D. Un Journaliste du siècle dernier. - E. Le Nismois. - F. Mercadette. - G. Pan-Pan. - H. Tap-Tap. -I. Trix.
