Hollande. This edition is noted in the catalogue of the Galitzin collection, at no. 268, and in issue 3 of the Bulletin Trimestrial, both of which call for two plates. The present copy would, therefore, seem to be lacking one of the plates. P.C. 31.d.31.

It seems most unlikely that J. L. Fougeret de Montbron is the author of this work as is generally asserted. The first edition was published in 1714, and if the genealogical research outlined by Maurice Saillet in his postface to Fougeret de Montbron's Margot la ravaudeuse (Paris: Pauvert, 1965, p. 16o) is correct then Montbron would have been about ten years of age when Le Canapé was published.

Of Cantel's work, H. S. Ashbee says: "These sonnets are of great merit, skilful in construction, terse, to the point, yet rich in imagery & allusion, & musical in versification, mostly very erotic, all equally meritorious in a literary point of view." (Ms note in Ashbee's own copy of the second edition of Gay's Bibliographie, which is preserved in the BL.)

The identity of this person is uncertain, but he is believed to be named Paul Little. Several of these typewritten novels have been published in recent years in America, including the Mark of the Beast series. According to Mr Gershon Legman, `Granamour' is the collective pseudonym used by a group of repatriated writers under the leadership of Anaïs Nin, as she describes remarkably in her Diary: 1939-1944, and in the Introduction to her Delta of Venus (New York, 1977), the single customer for whom all the Mss. were written being Mr Roy M. A few items in this collection, being mimeographed or duplicated "correspondance" magazines, are English. The following history of Tableaux des moeurs du temps is translated from Apollinaire's Essai bibliographique which precedes the abridged text of the work published at Paris in 1911 by the Bibliothèque des Curieuxin their series Les Maîtres de l'amour.

"A manuscript indicated as the original of Tableaux des moeurs du temps is included in the Catalogue de curiosités bibliographiques ... recueillis par le Bibliophile voyageur (Paris: chez Leblanc, 1837). At item no. 348 in this catalogue, the manuscript is described in the following manner:

" `Tableaux des moeurs du temps, dans les differens ages de la vie: Dialogues (xvii) suivis de l'Histoire de Zairette, ou Description des scenes du sérail de l'empereur Mouphack (par De la Popelinière), in-fol. v.m. The original manuscript of this work, executed under the eyes of the

Page 151 CREBILLON, C.-P. J. DE

author, limited to a single copy in 4to., is at present in the library of Prince Galitzin. The detailed description of it will be found in a catalogue published in Moscow in 1820 by G. de Laveau. `This singular manuscript is preceded by a fine portrait of La Popelinière which, we think, is from the burin of the famous Wille. After the text, is placed the notice of La Popelinière (by M. Audiffret) extracted from the Biographie of the Michaut brothers and the article on the works of La Popelinière taken from Barbier's Dictionnaire des anonymes.' Today, this manuscript is believed to be in the hands of M. Pierre L ..., [Pierre Louys] who possesses a great many other rare books. It has not proved possible for me to examine this manuscript; however, I am informed that its text presents important differences from the printed version.

"We know of only a single copy of the first printed edition of Tableaux. According to some authorities, the publication date was 1750, while to others it was 1760, and at the death of La Popelinière it passed into the hands of Louis XV, then to the Duc de la Vallière. rt then belonged to the Marquis de Paulmy. After this, we find the book in the sale catalogue of Prince Michel Galitzin's library (Moscow, 1820.) "Brunet adds: `Five years after the publication of this catalogue, the books of Prince Galitzin were sent to Paris for public auction. Tableaux des moeurs du temps was included among these, but as it was sold privately at a very high price to a French amateur, it ought not to have figured in the catalogue of the Russian Prince's books, published for the sale which took place on March 3rd 1825.'

"It is included in 1844 in the catalogue of the library of Rules Gallois (no. 529) and was sold for the sum of 5,00 francs. It then belonged to Baron Jérôme Pichon, president of the Société des Bibliophiles Français, who, according to Monselet, refused to sell it for "three thousand francs". Following this, it belonged to the fine library of the Englishman Frederick Hankey, who lived at Paris and who was one of the authors of L'École des biches. It then passed into the grenier of M. Cousin and, in 1891, appeared in the sale of his books when it was bought by a foreign amateur for 20,200 francs. This unique volume is in 4to., bound in red morocco, and displays on each cover the arms of La Popelinière: a cockerel repeated five times. It carries a manuscript note in the autograph of M. de Paulmy:

" This book was printed in a single copy in the house, and under the eyes of, M. de La Popelinière,fermier général, known for his wealth and taste for women. At his death, it passed into the hands of the Duc de La Vallière, and from him into my possession. Its chief merit lies in the finish of the miniatures on vellum, well above the normal quality for a work of this sort. It is M. de La Popelinière himself who is repre-

sented throughout, and of the lady who takes the leading role, not only do I not know her name, but even if did I would not reveal it." "These miniatures, twenty in number, of which only eighteen remain [the two designs en grisaille accompanying them today seeming to be by a different artist] arc charming masterpieces whose immoral grace is, without doubt, unique. They have, in turn, been ascribed to Caresme, Marolles and to Chardin. Of the attribution to Caresme, Gustave Brunet in his Fantaisies bibliographiques (Paris : 1863) says: ` "This volume is to be found in the J.G. sale (Techener, 1844, no. 529) ; the catalogue of this sale declares that the book was not to be displayed, that the reserve price was to be 5,000 francs and that the paintings were attributed to Caresme; but we believe this to be incorrect, because Phillipe Caresme, who was born about 1740, would have been too young to have illustrated the volume, which was published about 1750. We may remark that despite his original talent, Caresme does not figure in the biographies. Nodier possessed of this artist, who was, to his shame, the most able rival to Clinchtel, nineteen gouaches designed to accompany Du Lauren's extraordinarily feeble poem Balai ... On the subject of this painter, an article by M. P. Mantz in the Chronique des arts may be consulted."

"In his article entitled La `Zaïrette' des `Tableaux des moeurs du temps' de La Popelinière (Le Livre et l'Image, pt. 5, 10 July 1893), Baron Roger Portalis contests these attributions. According to him, one has to search "among such miniaturists as Rouquet, Pasquier and, above all, Bocquet for the mysterious author of what is one of the most curious and galant works of that time. We have seen portraits of women by the latter, who was miniaturist to Queen Marie Antoinette, very much in the style of those in this book."

"Not all these miniatures are erotic. Some of them, such as the one showing the Count paying court to Mlle de Se ... through the bars of the convent window, are quite respectable. Another of these shows the talkative Mme de Rostand with the good-natured, pug-nosed trades-woman Mme Dodo, and finally there is the one in which we see Zaïrette being borne off to the bordello in a palankeen carried by two black slaves. This last miniature has been reproduced in colours by M. Vigneron-Viret after the processes of Debucourt and, in particular, Janinet. Employing these methods of aquatinte working, Vigneroi-Viret has produced excellent results. This engraving has appeared in Le Livre et l'Image, where it serves to illustrate the article by Baron Roger Portalis already mentioned. I have heard it said that all the plates from Tableaux were reproduced in the same fashion.

"The other two copies of this work that have been cited in the

Page 153 CRISSIE

Mémoires secrets no longer exist, and it would appear very probable that they have been destroyed." The unique copy here described appeared again at auction sale in Paris during the 1970's when it was sold for the equivalent of $35,000. See G. Legman, The Horn Book, pp. 107-8.

An English translation, entitled A Lady of Quality, was published at New York about 1925, and reprinted North Hollywood, Calif., in 1964 by Brandon House. There is no credit for the translation, but the volume carries a preface, signed W. R. Eshelman, and an essay, extracted from another work, by Aldous Huxley.

The secret publisher may also have been one Lazenby, publisher of The Pearl. The inside back wrapper of each issue of The Cremorne contains advertisements for other publications, including what may be the remainders of the Hotten edition of Burn's Merry Muses (12mo. `1827'), here offered at i.105. in half morocco or £i.is. in wrappers, and an edition of Edward Sellon's erotic autobiography The Ups and Downs of Life (12mo. 112 pp. 8 coloured plates) which seems to be different to the first edition noticed by Ashbee, who describes it as an 8vo. of 110 pp. (See: Ashbee, vol. 1, 379-396.) The following note on this work is from Lawrence Forster's unpublished Catalogus Librorum Prohibitorum Britannica (compiled between the years 1910-1923) which I was allowed to examine at the shop of a well-known London bookseller (Dr N. C. Nothmann) on 12 November, 1973: At the end of the work is `End of Vol. 1,' and so far the work is completed in one printed volume. In the list of publications by the Erotika Biblion Society, however, it states that `Owing to this work never having been completed, a few copies of vol. II have been typewritten, from the original Ms., and nicely bound, for those readers and collectors who have read vol. i with appreciation.' " According to AIfred Rose, who was quoting from an advertisement for "Works issued in connection with the Erotica (sic) Biblion Society" at the end of an erotic novel entitled Pleasure Bound Afloat, the sub-title of Crissie is also given as A Narrative of Music Hall Depravity. (See: Rose no. 1141.) Mr G. Legman attributes this whole group of novels to John S. Farmer, Carrington's literary hack. The Forster Ms. attributes them to the Smithers/Nichols hack, Reginald Bacchus.

The author's christian name is mutilated on the front wrapper. This volume is evidently a Soho fabrication produced c. 196o. It is interesting, however, in that it is a forgery in Olympia Press "Traveller's Companion" style of a work never issued by Olympia Press. There are two entries for editions of a novel entitled The Teenagers by "Fanewell Cross" (Paris: Pall Mall Press, 1957, I9**) in the catalogue of the Library of Congress, and it has been reliably reported to me that a Soho-type reprint of this work, of uncertain date, has been issued under the name "Marcus van Heller," a pseudonym of one of Olympia Press stable of writers. Oxford: Printed at the University Press, for the Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge, 1870. 8vo. pp. 85. Three-quarter morocco, gilt. This is a photo-facsimile, done in 1934, of a copy of the original edition preserved in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and was made to the order of Alfred Rose. The photo-facsimile pages, which have been pasted onto pale grey leaves, measure 163 x 98mm.

On the verso of the free front endpaper, Rose has written : "These rota-prints were made for me conditionally that they should be deposited eventually in the British Museum. If therefore this volume be in my possession at the time of my death, I direct any legal representatives to forward it immediately to the Keeper of Printed Books at the Museum." This inscription is dated May 1934. Beneath this is added a postscript: "Upon its receipt at the British Museum, I request that its arrival there be notified to the Bodleian." At the end of the volume are inserted a bill and a receipt from the Bodleian, and a letter to Rose who was, at the time living at 44 Bedford Road, Gray's Inn, London, W.C.I. The letter and bill are dated 10 May 1934, and the receipt is dated 12 May 1934. Another facsimile copy, in the possession of Mr Gerrshon Legman,

was refused entry into USA The Bodleian Library acquired their copy of the original on 3 February 1925. Bibliotheca Arcana (no. 218) calls for "a somewhat amusing frontispiece, a coloured lithograph". The Bodleian copy seems to be wanting this, and Ashbee makes no mention of it in his notice of the work. (See: Ashbee, vol. 1, pp. 185187.) According to a MS note by Ashbee in his own copy of his Index Librorum Prohibitorum, one of the principal contributors to Cythera's Hymnal was Frederick Popham Pike, a barrister of some standing who died about 1875. The other contributors were Edward Sellon and G. A. Sala. (9 March 1935(6?).) P.C. 15.a.14.
