A muscle is a contractile form of body tissue. Muscle contraction is used to produce force and cause motion, either the movement of body parts (e.g. for locomotion) or the movement within internal organs.

There are over 600 muscles in the human body. Muscles make up a large part of a person's weight. They are interior organs and covered by the skin. In relaxed state, muscles are soft, fleshy and deformable. They return to their original shape as soon as the deforming force is taken away (somewhat like a gel pad). In contracted state, they harden and become shorter, thicker and more rounded.

Among individuals, muscle sizes and strengths vary considerably. Muscles grow as the body grows (from childhood to adulthood) and as they are used more (e.g. in sports or work); plus, there is a dietary, a hormonal and a genetic influence.

Muscles and spanking

Spanking is a very muscle-oriented activity. For the spanker, the arm motion requires the coordination of many muscles and is physically quite demanding. The target of the spanking, the spankee's buttocks, are also essentially a pair of two big, rounded muscles - gluteus maximus, the big buttocks muscle, is actually one of the biggest and strongest muscles of the human body.

Spanking normally doesn't do much damage to the spankee's muscles. The muscles are deformed quite a bit on every spank and the impact propagates in waves well into the thigh and lower back (which can be seen in slow-motion spanking videos and stills), but this normally does not harm the muscle tissue. Injuries from spanking are generally only to the skin and/or bleedings in subdermal layers (e.g. bruises).

The buttocks muscles remain mainly passive while being spanked, but can assume two different states: relaxed and contracted. The latter is known as clenching the buttocks, at which the two hemispheres become much harder, tighter and closer together, and more rounded. Clenching is a common and natural reaction to getting spanked, although experienced spankees know that a blow, e.g. with a cane, on a clenched buttock hurts in fact more, not less.

Clenching the buttocks is often considered a sign of resistance and therefore spankers often take verbal or physical measures to keep the spankee from clenching.

Worse than clenching is kicking and other leg movement which can really obstruct the spanking. Again, the first countermeasure is usually verbal instruction; if this doesn't help, there are physical measures the spanker can take.

Muscles and spanking art

An example drawing by Franco.

When drawing spanking art, the artist must know a lot about human anatomy, including the location, form, size and function of the main skeletal muscles. This knowledge is usually gained through observation and trial and error. The usual method is to study and draw the nude figure in various poses and from various angles, either using a real live model, a sculpture, another artwork, or a photograph.

When drawing figures without any model (i.e. from one's imagination), the drawing of the muscles is often referred to as fleshing out the figure, as it is essentially what gives flesh, form and mass to a skeleton-like stick figure.

Some artists draw spankers particularly big and muscular to emphasize their strength, and spankees slim and less muscular to emphasize their weakness and helplessness - for example, the artist of the K series.

Other artists draw both spankers and spankees athletic and muscular. This is particularly common in M/M spanking art with an appeal to gays, but is also found in some boy spanking art - a well-known example of the latter is Franco and several creators of rendered spanking art.

Muscles and sexuality

Muscles play an important role in human sexuality, too. As active agents they are elementary for any activity that involves body motion. As passive parts of the body, they can have a strong erotic component too, e.g. when they are seen, touched, squeezed, kneaded or massaged.
