Hair

Hair is an outgrowth of protein, found only on mammals. It projects from the epidermis, though it grows from hair follicles deep in the dermis.

The hair of non-human mammal species is commonly referred to as fur.

Compared to most mammals, human body hair is much reduced. Human head hair, on the other hand, grows longer than on most mammals and is more dense than most hair found elsewhere on the body.

When simply referring to Hair, if no qualifier is added it is normally assumed to be referring to head hair - pubic hair, facial hair, and body hair are normally referred to with their qualifiers.

Alapecia

If no hair is present, the person is said to be "hairless".

This may be caused by shaving the hair, or by using a depilatory creme.

The genetic cause of hair loss is referred to as Alapecia.
