Cleanliness is diligence in keeping one's body as well as objects and places in one's responsibility clean. It both applies to keeping something from becoming dirty, and to active cleaning or washing whenever something has become dirty.
Uncleanliness is the opposite of cleanliness, usually considered a bad and undesirable trait. Children are usually taught cleanliness in various aspects of life, and may get reproved and/or punished for uncleanliness (for example, for soiling their nice new clothes).
Cleanliness phrases
- "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" is a common phrase that describes humanity's high opinion of being clean.
- In the Boys Scout's, a scout takes an oath of honor to be clean in the Scout's Oath (or Promise). Between brave and reverent, cleanliness is number eleven among twelve honorable traits that a scout honors in the oath. The ideal states that the "Scout keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He goes around with those who believe in living by these same ideals. He helps keep his home and community clean" (American Boy Scout's Oath 2007).
