Performance appraisal
A performance appraisal, also referred to as a performance review, performance evaluation, (career) development discussion, or employee appraisal, sometimes shortened to PA, is a periodic and systematic process whereby the job performance of an employee is formally assessed and documented. The process and its results can be used to set goals and expectations, provide feedback, motivate employees, improve productivity, develop skills and derive actions (such as training or changes in responsibilities).
Similar performance appraisals or Behavior reviews are also used in schools, and bad results can possibly lead to punishment. For people (or characters, in fiction) facing spanking as a possible form of punishment, the relevance of such assessments is obvious.
Performance appraisals in workplaces
Performance appraisals are most often carried out by an employee's direct manager or line manager. The employee's performance is reviewed and assessed on a number of predetermined aspects, often using a form. In the past, the manager would often carry out the appraisal and then discuss the results with the employee. Nowadays, the manager and employee usually work together in the process, which can also include self-assessment and/or peer assessment. Self-assessment offers the employee a more active role in their performance appraisal, but also forces them to take a critical look at themselves, compile examples from the review period, and makes the manager's job easier. Peer assessment gives the employee feedback from his or her peers, providing a third point of view that can also offer new insights. The maximum is sometimes called 360 degree feedback.
Performance appraisals in educational institutions
Similar assessments can also be used in educational institutions such as schools for anything regarding the students that is not directly measured by tests, quizzes, and exams, such as various aspects of behavior. The results can go into the student's[report card. The report card is usually issued at the end of a term, but some schools also issue a weekly report card to track difficulties so that they can be corrected earlier. Weekly reports tend to be less detailed, confining themselves to progress or simply behavior for the week as Excellent/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, possibly detailing what was unsatisfactory, i.e. classroom behavior, missing homework, paying attention, etc.
Teachers are also subject to a regular performance assessment.
Behavior reviews in spankee training
Main article: Spankee training
Now we enter the exclusive, specialized realms of reality and fiction where spanking is commonplace. In spankee training, regular, possibly weekly or even daily, reviews of the spankee's behavior can be held, in which the spankee's recent good and bad behavior is analyzed and discussed. The review may conclude with reward, punishment, and/or changes to the spankee's rules and routines, or daily or weekly program if deemed necessary.
Working out the evaluation points will be an enjoyable task for the disciplinarian. It will give them good ideas on what aspects to include in the rules, instruction and training of the spankee. The following form can serve as an example. The review can also be done verbally without the use of a form.

Spankee training can vary greatly, and the items on the checklist will be very individual. For example, most of the above will not be on the checklist in adult couples with a domestic discipline agreement. Instead, good and bad habits such as healthy eating, exercise, smoking, alcohol, drugs, TV, tablet, or smartphone use can be included if the partners agree to monitor and change these behaviors for the better.
Behavior reviews in spanking literature
behavior reviews that are followed by corporal punishment (and other painful and/or humiliating consequences) are found in some spanking novels. Fictional educational institutions that combine schooling with parenting or in loco parentis aspects, such as boarding schools, reformatories or orphanages, especially if set in the past, make for settings in which such behavior reviews combined with spanking are believable. One example is the novel The Old Rectory.
Fictional workplaces can also be the setting for adult/adult performance reviews combined with spanking. (A lot is possible in fiction.) Domestic workers, such as the classic maid or houseboy, are a sub-topic of this.
