Bedtime
A bedtime is the time set by parents (or people in loco parentis, such as babysitters) for a child to go to bed to sleep.
Getting ready for bed
Getting ready for bed involves tasks such as:
- washing certain body parts, or taking/being given a bath
- brushing the teeth
- brushing the hair
- using the toilet
- removing jewelry, watches, etc
- undressing
- changing into sleepwear, such as pajamas, blanket sleepers or nightshirts
In boarding schools and on trips or holidays that involve young people, the equivalent of bedtime is lights-out.
Bedtime rituals
Children often dislike the idea of being sent to bed, so bedtime can be a difficult procedure. Often, parents use rituals such as stories, songs, or nursery rhymes to help children feel more secure, and become accustomed to a comparatively rigid schedule of sleep.
The internationally most used bedtime rituals are the bedtime story, the goodnight kiss and friendly wishes such as "good night", "sleep well", "sweet dreams" or "shleven sie gut" (German).
