A tether is a rope, chain or leash used to secure a captive so that he or she cannot move far from a spot. It may be used to confine the captive, either on its own or in conjunction with other bondage or imprisonment in a cage or cell.
The tether is usually fixed to a collar or to a cuff around the wrist or ankle.
A tether differs from a leash in that it is not used to lead a mobile captive, just to keep the captive in a fixed location.
