Medical Fetishism

Medical fetishism is a paraphilia wherein the activities and paraphernalia of medicine are eroticised. Many observers believe that medical fetishism is the result of behavioral imprinting from childhood.

Typical medical fetishism scenarios include intimate examinations such as rectal examination, gynecological examination, rectal temperature taking, catheterization, enemas, injections, the insertion of suppositories, menstrual cups and prostatic massage. Dentistry and teeth are also a source of fetishes. Most noteworthy is dental braces fetishism, which is a form of sexual fetishism wherein a person is sexually aroused or stimulated by the sight, brushing, or feel of dental braces (particularly silver stainless steel braces, but sometimes retainers and headgear). Other medical devices are also fetishized, such as orthopedic casts and orthopedic braces in abasiophilia.

Another form of medical fetishism is surgical fetishism, which eroticises the idea of either performing surgery or having surgery performed on one's self. Even more specific is anesthesia fetishism which involves the procedures and devices used to administer general anesthesia, especially the mask used to administer gaseous anesthesia to a patient. These can be related to hypnofetishism or balloon fetishism (the latter likely because of the balloon-like 'rebreathing bag' often used when administering gaseous anesthesia).

Attempting to carry out medical or medical-like procedures without proper training or sterilization is a highly dangerous activity and could result in serious injury, infection, and death. Performing surgery when unqualified is also highly illegal in most countries.

Medical Role Play

An intimate examination can form large part of a scene in medical play where the dominant inflicts one or more embarrassing and humiliating quasi-medical procedures on the submissive. These may include an examination of the anus or vagina with a speculum, and handling and twisting of the penis and testicles.

I think all of us, at one time or another. have played 'Doctor' or 'Nurse'. It can be as simple as a "you show me yours and I'll show you mine" type of play to very intensive play complete with operating arenas.

One underlying theme of medical play seems to be the detachment of the medical professional ordering the patient to disrobe, move this way or that, and to do things (under orders, of course) that would be otherwise 'against the rules'.

After all, having the nurse (in a very short nurses uniform, of course) giving her patient a sponge bath, giving him a full body massage and kissing any place that hurts, well, that's just what the Doctor ordered!

Other Medical Play sub-topics might include enemas, piercing, cutting or playing with medical casts, or just a simple doctor or nurse uniforms.

Jennings gag

A Jennings gag is a medical device deigned to keep the patient's mouth open during procedures. Its has become a popular form of gag used in BDSM scenes and imagery. The gag consists of a hinged rod, shaped so that it will slip under the front teeth, two thumb presses open the gag and a ratchet prevents the gag from from closing once in place.

While the gag looks good in use, there are a number of design problems which limit its use in a BDSM context. The main problem is the gag can have a tendency to fall out of the mouth. The way to limit this problem is to force the mouth open as far as it will go but this in turn will strain the jaw and can cause problems for the wearer after more than a few minutes. A number of companies have produced modifications to the design which incorporate a strap that goes around the back of the head helping to hold the gag in place. The article on the Whitehead gag (which is very simmilar in design to the Jennings gag) shows a gag modified in this manner. A second problem is that they do not have any form of padding on the part that comes into contact with the teeth (as this would make sterilisation difficult) this can be uncomfortable for the wearer and could in extreme cases chip or damage the teeth.

As with most SM equipment common sense is needed when using a Jennings gag, do not try to open them too far or leave them in the subs mouth too long. Remember, these items were designed as medical/dental devices. They cannot be expected to function as a secure gags (although, depending on the size and shape of an individual's jaw and teeth, they might be effective in some cases). It is generally possible to push them out of the mouth with a bit of effort.

Needle play

Play piercing, needle play, or recreational acupuncture is body piercing done for the purpose of enjoying the experience rather than producing a permanent body decoration.

Sounds

Sounding or urethral sounding is a medical activity using probes called sounds to increase the inner diameter of the urethra and to locate obstructions in the urethra.

Speculum

Rectalsp.jpg

A speculum is a medical tool for investigating body cavities.

Its form is dependent on the body cavity for which it is designed. Ear specula resemble a funnel, and come in a variety of sizes.

Nasal specula have two relatively flat blades with handle. The instrument is hinged so that when the handles are squeezed together the blades spread laterally, allowing examination.

A vaginal speculum, developed by J. Marion Sims, consists of a hollow cylinder with a rounded end that is divided into two hinged parts, somewhat like the beak of a duck. The speculum is inserted into the vagina to dilate it for examination of the vagina and cervix.

A specialized form of vaginal speculum is the weighted speculum, which consists of a broad half tube which is bent at about a 90 degree angle, with the channel of the tube on the exterior side of the angle. One end of the tube has a roughly spherical metal weight surrounding the channel of the speculum. A weighted speculum is placed in the vagina during vaginal surgery with the patient in the lithotomy position. The weight holds the speculum in place and frees the surgeon's hands for other tasks.

Vaginal specula are also used for anal surgery, although several other forms of anal specula exist. One common form resembles a tube that has a removable bullet shaped insert. When the speculum is inserted into the rectum the insert dilates the rectum to the diameter of the tube. The insert is then removed, leaving the tube to allow examination of the rectum. This style of anal speculum is one of the oldest designs for surgical instruments still in use, with examples dating back many centuries.

All specula were formerly made of metal, and sterilized after use. However, many, especially those used in Emergency Departments and Doctor's offices, are now made of plastic, and are sterile, disposable, single-use items. Those used in surgical suites are still commonly made of metal.

Vaginal and anal specula are also sometimes used as sex toys.

Medical gloves

Medical gloves are medical safety accessories that ensure sanitary hospital conditions by limiting patients' exposure to infectious matter. They also serve to protect health professionals from disease through contact with bodily fluids.

Medical gloves are traditionally made of latex and powdered with cornstarch to lubricate the gloves, making them easier to don. Cornstarch replaced Lycopodium powder and/or talc but since cornstarch can also impede healing if it gets into tissues (as during surgery), non-powdered gloves are being increasingly used during surgery and other sensitive procedures. Special manufacturing processes are used to compensate for the lack of powder.

There are two main types of gloves: exam, and surgical. Surgical gloves have more precise sizing (numbered sizing, generally from size 5.5 to size 9), and are made to higher specifications.

Nitrile glove.jpg

Due to the increasing rate of latex allergy among health professionals as well as in the general population, there has been an increasing move to gloves made of non-latex materials such as vinyl or nitrile rubber. However, these gloves have not yet replaced latex gloves in surgical procedures, as gloves made of alternate materials generally do not fully match the fine control or greater sensitivity to touch available with latex surgical gloves. High-grade non-latex gloves (such as nitrile gloves) also cost two or more times the price of their latex counterparts, a fact that has often prevented switching to these alternate materials in cost-sensitive environments, such as many hospitals.

Powder-free medical gloves are also used in medical cleanroom environments, where the need for cleanliness is often similar to that in a sensitive medical environment. Similar but specially tested gloves are used in electronics cleanrooms.

Wartenberg Wheel

Fleur-12.jpg Main article: Wartenberg wheel

The original concept and design of a wartenberg pinwheel (occasionally seen mispelled as wartenburg or wartunburg) or medically known as the neurological wheel was the ingenuity of the great Dr. Wartenberg. His brilliant device was used to test the nerve reactions as it glided across the skin.

Kinky fetish folks have come up with a much more sensual use for the good Dr. Wartenberg's nasty little neuro wheel or pinwheel! It is an absolute must have for any BDSM dungeon, clinic, toy box or doctor bag!

They are great for anywhere on the body and two make it even more tantalizing and often, unbearable!! And they are just great for taking along with you in your purse or attaché or the glove box in the car for those unexpected play times on the road! Or try our new disposable pinwheels which come in individual carrying cases... all plastic, durable and very hygienic for multi-partner play!

Whitehead gag

A Whitehead gag, also called a mouth spreader gag or a dental open mouth gag, is a device to hold the mouth open. The device is similar to a Jennings gag, the main difference being the two ratchets in front of the gag to hold the mouth open. The image shows a Whitehead gag modified for BDSM use, with a strap added to help hold the gag in place. This article uses material from Wipipedia website
