Biting is to shut one's jaws with pressure while something is between the teeth, such that the teeth will cut or crush semi-soft material such as food. Continued closing and opening the jaws is called chewing.

A wound caused by biting is a bite. People may be bitten by animals; biting a person is sometimes done in a fight or in self-defense. Children are taught that they must not bite other people, and biting may be a punishable offense just like hitting or kicking.

In Lurking Dragon's Rejuve Universe, the reptiloid Draconian race has a method of corporal punishment that is done by chewing the delinquent's tail.
