The hard start is a spanking technique in which the first spank(s) are given particularly hard, possibly with an implement, without any previous warm-up, as an "attention getter" at the beginning of a spanking. After one, two, or three hard spanks that are really felt, the spankee's undivided attention is ensured and the rest of the spanking may be given in a lighter fashion.
The spanker may also give the spankee one or two hard swats before sending him or her to stand in corner time before the real spanking is given, so that the sting in his/her bottom will remind the spankee of what is to come while he or she is waiting.
The opposite technique of the hard start is the soft start: to begin the spanking with very light spanks (pats).
