Modesty is the feeling that it is embarrassing if other people see something very private and personal, such as one's underwear or a part of the body that is usually covered. A modest person feels embarrassment or shame when such a thing occurs.
Frequently, when a person is to be punished, their modesty is not respected - they may be made to undress, for example, for a corporal punishment. The shame they feel at this is often considered a welcome aspect of the punishment.
This aspect can be deliberately intensified by:
- training the person the virtue of modesty in general life (e.g. in childrearing)
- avoiding and/or forbidding nudity in non-punitive situations
- allowing other people to be present as witnesses
- forbidding the delinquent to cover his/her private parts (e.g. by the instruction "hands on your head" or "hands on your back")
- making the delinquent take a particularly exposed pose (e.g. spread legs and/or bent over)
- commenting on the delinquent's state of undress
- mocking or making fun of the delinquent
