Crying (verb) is shedding tears because of grief, sorrow or pain. It is usually accompanied by characteristic sounds such as sobbing, whining, sniveling, bawling or wailing. (See definition below) Weeping is synonymous with crying.

In many cultures, crying is associated with babies and children. Also, in many societies, boys are expected not to cry as easily as girls. This is reflected in sayings such as "boys don't cry" or "big girls don't cry". However many people also find that tears can be positive and can help to cleanse the soul. Some modern therapy movements such as Re-evaluation Counseling believe that crying is beneficial to health and mental wellbeing and positively encourages it.

Crying and spanking

In consensual spanking, the spankee may start crying from an extended spanking experience. The partners may decide that the spankee needs a "good cry". Upon agreement, the spanker will deliver a spanking intended to bring first, tears to the bottom's eyes, and then unrestrained crying. When crying is a regular part of their ritual, the agreement may be silent. Some devotees enter into a spanking session seeking crying or weeping. At times, the spankee themselves may commence crying knowing what is coming to him/her. The spanker may even order the spankee to start crying or pouting at a certain point in the process.

Crying occurs differently for different people. Males are less prone to crying than females. Thus, a more forceful and longer spanking is needed to induce male crying. Regular partners understand this and a woman may deliver a spanking designed to reduce a male to tears. It is important for the spanker to realize that the crying is not from pain. Crying is the natural desired outcome of an erotic spanking.

Definitions and synonyms

Sobbing

Sobbing is crying aloud with convulsive gasping, crying without control. Due to its uncontrolled nature, sobbing is an advanced state of crying or weeping. Typically sobbing is brought on by grief or pain, when the crying is very emotional.

Sobbing also often comes with a state where there is too much liquid (snot, saliva) in a person's nose and mouth, which makes a typical noise is made whenever breathing in. After a person has calmed down after sobbing, they usually need to clean their face and blow their nose.

Wailing

Wailing is loud and continued crying or whining, with or without tears. It is usually a sign of being in intense, unbearable pain, either physical or emotional, unable to keep quiet any longer. Young children, though, may also often wail without a recognizable cause.

Whining

Whining is a noise made when someone is in pain or discomfort, either physical or emotional. This may include even mild discomfort such as being bored or having a fit of temper without much of an external stimulus. Whining is typical of children, but in certain situations, adults too can whine.

Whining is different from crying in that no tears are shed. Whining is often partially involuntary and partially voluntary (to complain or to express and communicate one's discomfort). Whining can be an unarticulated vowel, a groan, a moan, or a word-like utterance such as "ow". In vowel-style whining, practically any vowel or diphthong may be used, e.g. "ah", "er", "ee", "ay", "oh", "oo". Animals, too, can whine, for example, dogs.

Even normal speech (such as "Why do I always have to clean up my room?") can be called whining when it is uttered in a lamenting tone of voice. Loud involuntary whining combined with crying is known as sniveling or sobbing. Loud, intense vowel-style whining (with or without crying) is known as wailing.
