A back straightner

A back straightener is a product that has been used since the Victorian era. In an effort to correct posture and in some cases slim the waist, the back straightener has become popular. Some of the first back straighteners were used for children who were deemed crippled. They would have the wooden device placed behind the child’s back. The arms of the child would then hook around the sides. The arms would be strapped to the device, forcing a child to sit and walk in an upright posture. Sitting or walking in any other fashion would be incredibly painful. In one sad instance, violin wire was used to strap the child to the device. They were also used as a punishment for misbehaving children on occasion. As time went on, the materials used to make straighteners evolved.

Today, a back straightener is a much different product. Many orthopedic surgeons and doctors use the device for children with scoliosis. Other ailments which cause a curving of the spine require the use of a back straightener. Most of the devices are made from plastic now. They allow for more free movement of the body while keeping the spine in line. The back straighteners used today are designed to be covered by clothing and can even be worn to sleep in. It is normally used before and after any surgical procedure, as well.

The back straightener has been around for centuries. The device can be a useful and necessary tool when properly used. Although the Victorian design lacked comfort, the purpose was good. The basic idea of the back straightener is to correct posture. As time has gone on comfort, practicality and function have all come together in the design of the modern back straightener. Undoubtedly, as technology improves the design of the back straightener will continue to change.
