The Romance of Chastisement is a Victorian pornographic collection on the theme of flagellation by George H. Stock (a probable pseudonym, also credited with The Whippingham Papers) and published by William Dugdale in London in 1866. It was reprinted by John Camden Hotten c. 1871 and by William Lazenby in 1883.

The collection contains The Revelations of Shrewsbury House.

Georges Grassal wrote under the pseudonym Hugues Rebell. He used also, with Hector France and Charles Carrington, the collective pseudonym Jean de Villiot.

But it is certain that other authors have written under the pseudonym of Jean de Villiot, as is the case for "The love Flogging" and "The Flogging of Women in France", attributed to Stéphane Arnoulin.

See the first essay of bibliography on flogging (1912).

1902 reprint and translation

Le Magnétisme du Fouet, ou les Indiscrétions de Miss Darcy (1902).

In 1902 it was reprinted by Charles Carrington as The Magnetism of the Rod or the Revelations of Miss Darcy. In the same year Carrington also published a French translation by Jean de Villiot (Hugues Rebell, real name Georges Grassal) under the title Le Magnétisme du Fouet, ou les Indiscrétions de Miss Darcy.

Modern reprint

  • "The Romance of Chastisement" by Delectus Books, 1993. 150 pages, hardcover. ISBN 9781897767153
