Gimmick

A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature.

In spanking art

Some might say that spanking art is a gimmick because it uses spanking as a draw to the art but the art is no better or worse for the spanking. For those who consider spanking art a unique genre, the spanking isn't a gimmick, but rather the requirement for the genre. Therefore, artistic or literary gimmicks in spanking art would be a feature in the medium that is somehow different or special from what is normally seen in spanking art. For example, a character in a unique or peculiar position to receive her spanking, or an unusual pairing.
