X-5 (formally known as NewAiph Junior Academy) is a series of spanking stories about four young girls (three with disabilities) and one boy who attends NewApih Academy, a school that trains children with superpowers. It is part of the Aynafesse Chronicles by Lawrence Kinden. This story takes place in a city called NewAiph, which is the same setting as Spook Squad and was built on edge of the destruction of Aiphledaliph, the capital city in 'Mancers.

Synopsis

The first several chapters follow the misadventures of six young people as they gain their superpowers and learn to deal with them. Further, they must learn to deal with bullies, spankings, and the difficulties of friendship.

Primary Protagonists

Luckshmi "Lux" Aurra
Lux is a blind orphan girl who treats her friends as a surrogate family. She is also a strict girl who generally stays within the bounds of the rules.
Lux's power is botonomancy (plant manipulation), her colors are green and brown. "Lux" is Latin for "Light" which is ironic because she cannot see. Her last name, "Aurra" is similar to the name of a protagonist of 'Mancers, Aura.
Dexter "Dex" King
Dex is the recently orphaned son of a brilliant inventor. He has been sent to live with his aunt and cousin. Adam, his cousin, is the same bully that the protagonists have been dealing with since kindergarten. Dex is a shy and clumsy boy who has a crush on Mox.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Dex is a brilliant inventor and his colors are copper, silver and gold. "Dex" is an abbreviation for Dexterity which is ironic given how clumsy Dex is.
Griselda "Pax" Paxton
Pax is a fiery and pugnacious girl with absolutely no hair. She is constantly standing up for herself using her antagonistic ways and is often spanked for it. She takes spankings stoicly. Of the protagonists, she is the only one who does one live at the Academy but rather with her father.
Pax's power is martial arts, her colors are red, white, and pink. Pax is Latin for "Peace", which is ironic given Pax's pugnacious attitude.
Hyzmene "Hex" Quintuno
Hyzmene is an albino girl from Gaelshan whose father is a mob boss. She enrolls at NewAiph Academy in sixth grade. She comes to the Academy thinking to be the most popular kid at school but things don't go her way. She is initially at odds with the other protagonists.
Hex is a Hexmage, a mage able to cast curses. Her colors are black and red. The word "hex" has two meanings. The first is derived from the German Hexe which means witch and is used in English to refer to a spell or curse. The second is the Greek prefix for six as in hexagon. Because Hyzmene both casts "curses" and is the sixth member of the group, her name is particularly apt, which is at odds with the names of the other primary characters whose names are opposed to their natures. Further, her last name, "Quintuno" are made up of "Quint" which means five and "uno" which means one.
Elizabeth "Mox" Tulamocks
Mox is a shy and small girl who is missing her legs below the knees and uses a wheel chair to get around. Mox has never been spanked for discipline and strives to be a good girl. When harassed by bullies, she draws inward and is embarrassed to ask her friend for help.
Her powers are cryokinesis (ice manipulation) and pyrokinesis (fire manipulation), her colors are red, blue, and purple. "Mox" is Latin for "Now" which is ironic because Mox cannot move quickly given she's in a wheel chair.
Jessica "Vox" Vacsala
Vox is a mute girl who is fond of pranks and often finds herself spanked for it. She refers to the other girls as "sisters". Because she is mute, she converses via sign language. When she converses with Lux, who is blind, she uses a touch version of sign lanugage.
Vox's powers are invisibility and phasing. Her color is white. "Vox" is Latin for "Voice" which is ironic given that she cannot speak.

Other characters

Ms. Star
The Dorm mother for the Lux, Vox, and Mox. She is a kind and motherly woman. In fact, she's so kind that some girls feel bad when they're naughty enough to require her to spank them. Ms. Star's power is that of Justice. She even likens her power to the "mythic" Sisters of Justice from the city of Regnessa (as seen in 'Mancers)
Adam Ingersoll
Adam is a bully at NewAiph Academy who is a couple of years older than the protagonists. He doesn't appear in every story but has always been an antagonist. In Chapter 3, Now for Mox, Adam spanks Mox. In chapter 6, "Five for Fighting" it is revealed that his power is invulnerability, and he spanks Pax. In Adam is also Dexter's cousin and treats his small, brainy cousin with disdain.
Jacinda Ingersoll
Adam's mother and Dexter's aunt (his father's sister). Jacinda is a kind woman with a bit of hesitancy (home magic). On meeting her for the first time, Pax is surprised at how kind she is given how mean Adam is.

Symbols & tropes

This series features a cloth that is used for student uniforms at NewAiph Academy. It is an off-white material composed of technological and magical elements that reign in potentially dangerous powers so that young people who come into their power without training don't hurt themselves or others. It has the interesting side effect of turning the color associated with particular power.

Chapters

The chapter names all follow a pattern. They are all three words long, the second word is a preposition and one of the three is one of the names of the protagonists, except for the 6th chapter.

  1. Kindergarten: Fury of Pax
  2. First Grade: Light for Lux
  3. Second Grade: Now for Mox
  4. Third Grade: Silence of Vox
  5. Fourth Grade: Dex and Stumble
  6. Fifth Grade: Five for Fighting
  7. Sixth Grade: Tet to Hex
