Secondary school
A secondary school, also known as high school, or college depending on location, is the last stage of compulsory education. The next stage of education is optionally tertiary school. Children usually transfer to secondary school between the ages of 11-14 years, and finish between the ages of 16-18 years, though there is considerable variation from country to country (see schoolchild).
The purpose of secondary education can be to give common knowledge, to prepare for either higher education or vocational education, or to train directly to a profession.
While there are a few compulsory subjects, most subjects are electives, so unlike previous levels students do not take most of their subjects with the same people. Some secondary school have a Dean in charge of each year group.
Secondary schools and spanking
In scondary schools where school corporal punishment is (or was) used, its application is more formal than found in domestic disciplinary spanking. It is more likely for junior students to receive it than senior ones. It is also less likely for the classroom teacher to apply the chastisement themselves, but rather send them too their Dean's Office, or the (Vice-)Principal's Office.
