A schoolyard is the school grounds outside of the school buildings; sometimes not including out of bounds areas.

The schoolyard normally consists both flat paved areas and/or flat grass playing fields.

Typical equipment

Schoolyards tend to have lots of open area typical set up to be easily usable for sports. As well as plenty of benches and are designed for sitting. Schoolyards designed for younger students (see Preschool, Primary school) normally have additional play equipment found in playgrounds such as swing sets (See below) and jungle gyms. Also the flat paved ares might also be painted for games such as "Squares" and "Hop Scotch".

Swings and swing sets

Swing set

A swing is a hanging seat, often found at playgrounds for children including adults, at circus for acrobats, or on a porch for relaxing, although they may also be items of indoor furniture, such as the Indian oonjal. The seat of a swing may be suspended from chains or ropes. Once a swing is in motion it continues to oscillate like a pendulum until external interference or drag brings it to a halt. Swing sets are very popular with children.

On playgrounds, several swings are often suspended from the same metal or wooden frame, known as a swing set, allowing more than one child to play at a time. Such swings come in a variety of sizes and shapes. For infants and toddlers, swings with leg holes support the child in an upright position while a parent or sibling pushes the child to get a swinging motion. Some swing sets include play items other than swings, such as a rope ladder or sliding pole.

For older children, swings are sometimes made of a flexible canvas seat, of rubberized ventilated tire tread, of plastic, or of wood. A common backyard sight is a wooden plank suspended on both sides by ropes from a tree branch.

Jungle gyms

Jungle gym

The jungle gym, monkey bars, or climbing frame, is a piece of playground equipment made of many pieces of material, such as metal pipe or rope, on which children can climb, hang, or sit. The monkey bar designation refers to the rambunctious, climbing play of monkeys.

Varieties

Large, metal, geometric-shaped jungle gyms were once common on playgrounds, but they sometimes led to injuries when children hit their heads on the bars or swung on them improperly, causing bruises, sprains and fractures. Newer jungle gyms are often made of alternative materials, including PVC, other plastics, rope varieties, wood/pipe and other materials. Non-metallic jungle gyms have the advantage of being user-friendly even on a very hot or very cold day, because they do not get too hot or too cold to the touch. Jungle gyms and monkey bars made of PVC and plastic flex when struck, absorbing the impact better than more-rigid metal models. PVC and plastic will not rust.

Jungle gym shapes may include wooden platforms with ladders and railings around the outer edges. A variety of shapes are seen in school playgrounds, parks, and backyards, including geodesics, rocket-shaped structures, and other configurations.

One common type of jungle gym is a row of overhead bars, high enough for a child to hang from, but not so high as to cause serious injury in a fall. A child can "walk" hand-over-hand from one end to the other.

Natural environments

Many schoolyards and/or parks may have trees, grass areas or maybe even sandy beach areas which are very conducive to outdoor play. Let your imagination run wild but always be aware of your environment to avoid embarrassing for illegal situations.

Schoolyards and spanking

While most school corporal punishments typical either take place in a office, classroom, or even the hall, some spanking fiction go for an on-the-spot spanking out in the schoolyard. This normally means an hand spanking, unless the guardian figure is depicted as a strict type that wander the schoolyard with spanking implement in hand.

Schoolyard offenses

In BDSM play

Swings and/or swing sets, whether in a city park or someone's personal backyard, provide safe anchor points for outdoor bondage play. All participants should recognize the fact that outdoor bondage can be legally unsafe if you do not ensure that your play is very discreet and out of the public eye and away from children.
