A punishment haircut is when a person receives a short haircut as a punishment (nonconsensually).

In prisons, many female prisoners have their hair cut upon entering. In the most severe cases, the girls head is shaved completly bald. Punishment haircuts work via shame and humiliation and are thus a form of psychological punishment. They can be given under the pretext of hygiene and/or 'proper looks'.

Haircuts as a punishment for children were especially popular in the 1960s and 1970s when long hairstyles were the norm. A misbehaving boy might be given a crewcut for bad behavior, whereas a girl would typically receive a short pixie hairstyle that was cut to the length of her ear lobes. Such haircuts were most frequently given by mothers after more short-term punishments proved ineffective.
