Numbness is a partial or total lack of sensation. Numbness can be a symptom of nerve damage or dysfunction. Numbness can also result from cold, or from overstimulation, especially extended repeated stimulation.

As numbness in a body part reduces all sensation, it also reduces the feeling of pain. This is put to medical use in local anesthesia.

Numbness in spanking

After prolonged spanking the bottom may become somewhat numb.

After several minutes of continued spanking, the buttocks may become somewhat numb, which counters the effect of increasing pain due to increasing soreness. This numbness may, or may not be, a welcome effect. In cases where it is undesired, the following countermeasures can be used to re-sensitize a numb bottom:

  1. pause for a few minutes
  2. massage or rub the bottom
  3. lightly scratch over the skin with your fingertips
  4. create new sensations using e.g. fur, feather, wartenberg wheel, spiked gloves etc.
  5. change the implement to change the type of pain

The preferred choice may depend on the type of spanking: 2) and 3) are popular in erotic and sensual spanking, 4) is popular in BDSM types of play.

In cases where numbness is wanted in order to alleviate pain, it can be created by means of cold water (e.g. a cold bath or shower), or an ice pack.

Numbness in bondage

Padding helps to reduce the risk of numbness from cuffs.

In bondage, numbness, e.g. in the hands or feet, can result from too tight or inappropriate restraints that block the blood circulation. Such numbness is an alarm signal that indicates potential serious harm to the nerves and vascular systems. If it is noticed, the bondage should be immediately removed.

This danger is particularly high when the bottom's weight pulls on his/her cuffs, e.g. in suspension bondage.
