A thong is a type of lingerie or underwear consisting of a narrow strip of material running through the crotch with each end affixed to a cord or narrow band round the waist. The strip must be wide enough at the front to cover the genitals. It may be worn by men or women, though one designed for women may be inadequate to cover a man's genitals.

It is usually made of cotton or nylon, but fetish versions are available in many materials.

The effect of this design is that the bottom is prominently displayed. Some leotards and bodysuits are thong-cut at the bottom to achieve the same effect. The strip through the crotch may have an effect on the wearer similar to a crotch rope.

Thongs are sometimes worn under tight trousers or skirts to minimise "Visible panty lines" VPL.
