Gating is a removal of privileges punishment found in boarding schools.

A student who is being subjected to a gating has the privilege of leaving the school grounds revoked. He or she is denied access to any amenities the local community might provide, and also prevented visiting friends that are day students or locals who do not attend the school. At some schools it may even extend to the ability for a weekend visit to the student's home.

This is similar to a grounding they might receive when at home, however due to the larger size of the student body and on-campus amenities it is somewhat less restrictive. Gating might also not be an option for young students if the privilege to leave the school grounds is restricted to older students in the first place.
