A beating is any form of corporal punishment involving blows to the body, such as spanking, paddling, strapping, or whipping. Beating also means the act of inflicting a beating.

In general, "beating" implies a relatively severe punishment, and it often implies abusive conduct, as in the phrase "wife beating". Most devotees of BDSM and recreational spanking would not describe what they do as "beating", while the term is frequently used to describe judicial corporal punishment, school corporal punishment, and earlier domestic spanking.
