Used figuratively, "Barbie bondage" is a metaphor for girls and young women adapting, partly due to outside influence, to the stereotypical bubble-brained, glamour-obsessed gender role that Barbie dolls are said to promote.

Used in a more literal sense, "Barbie bondage" refers to actual Barbie dolls being bound. In one sense this can be a humorous connotation to the fact that new Barbie dolls are secured very tightly to the cardboard backing of the boxes they are sold in, by twist-ties.

In another sense, this refers to Barbie dolls being bound and/or dressed in fetish clothing to purposely evoke a connotation with BDSM. This can be done as a form of art, a way of protesting against Mattel]'s purported ultra-capitalism and stereotypes, or simply as a sexual fantasy.

RCR-64 was the "official designation" for Robin's 64th birthday party. "The Birthday Cake" for the RCR-64 party is shown at right, complete with Barbie in Bondage, complete with a bench (lower right) with all the appropriate props (camera, rope, candle, more chain) for a bondage photo shoot. The cake is also decorated with fleur-dis-lis and Robin's initials.
