A safety device which, if (or when) it fails, fails in such a way that will cause no harm (or at least a minimum of harm) to other devices or danger to personnel.

Designing a device or system in such a way that there are limits:

  1. Motorized gates - In case of power outage the gate can be pushed open by hand with no crank or key required.
  2. A control operation or function that prevents improper system functioning or catastrophic failure in the event of device malfunction or operator error.
  3. A circuit breaker opening if there is a short circuit, rather than overheating or burning the wiring.
