A Monroe piercing is a piercing placed off-centre in the upper lip, meant to resemble a beauty mark. It is named after the actress Marilyn Monroe, who had a birthmark near her right nostril. It is also known as a 'Madonna' or 'Cindy Crawford' piercing, who also have a beauty mark above their lip.
History
The Monroe piercing has a recent history, unlike others that were popularized in the late 70s and 80s. Seen in the mid/late 90s on the bassist of the band Coal Chamber, Rayna. Celebrities with the Monroe piercing include Travis McCoy, of Gym Class Heroes, Amy Winehouse, Ashley Massaro, Christine Dolce aka ForBiddeN, Mutya Buena of former Sugababes fame, and Trace Cyrus, of Metro Station. In the past decade, the Monroe piercing has become more associated with the mainstream, due to acts such as Amy Winehouse.
This piercing is usually done with a 12, 16, or 18 gauge labret, but can sometimes be pierced with a barbell. The labrets used often have a metal ball or a jewel. The lip will often swell considerably after the piercing. The piercing needs both facial and oral aftercare to keep both sides of the jewelry clean at all times. Monroes are prone to infection, especially if the site is not kept clean whilst healing. It is often recommended that sea salt soaks be used (both external and internal), and that the teeth are brushed at least three times a day (which reduces the amount of bacteria). Smoking, drinking or playing with the piercing during the healing period can irritate the skin and delay healing.
An advantage of Monroe piercings is that the lip generally heal faster than other piercings. Two sources state that the estimated healing time is eight to twelve weeks. Another one states three to six weeks.
Basically, the amount of pain experienced during the piercing process differs from person to person, and depends on the specific location of the piercing. Those with thicker lips or well-exercised facial muscles will have more flesh or muscle to pierce through.
