Infractions of rules aboard ships of the seventeenth and eighteenth-century ships was ordered by senior officers, usually the Captain, and meted out by the Boatswain mate or Gunners mate.
Shipboard corporal punishment was usually consisted of:
- Kissing the gunner's daughter
- Flogging while bound to a mast or other non-moveable part of the ship
- Extra duty (painting, working in the kitchen, galley, etc.)
- Standing extra watches ('guarding the parade grounds', etc)
- Being hung from the yardarm
- Bread and water
- Reduced rations
- Reduction in grade or Reduction of pay
- Restriction to quarters (or restriction to the ship)
- Running the gauntlet
- Keelhauling
