- Known as the gay Betsy Ross, is the creator of the Rainbow Flag (San Francisco in 1978)
- Berkeley Barb (California)
- Founded in August 1965 by Max Scherr. Ran some of the very first BDSM personal ads in print. In the early 1980's, the sex ads were separated into a section entitled "The Spectator". The Barb, no longer supported by sex ads, went out of business. For a while, Kat Sunlove and Layne Winklebleck were editors. The Spectator went out of business in late 2005. Both "The Barb" and "The Spectator" published stories about BackDrop. "It was one of the first and most influential of all the counterculture newspapers of the late 1960's, covering such subjects as the anti-war and civil rights movements as well as the social changes advocated by the youth culture," wrote one contributor.
