An ice pack or ice bag is a sac filled with crushed or ice cubes, or a refrigerant gel. Such a bag is used to cool body parts that are too hot or injured. The local cooling closes the capillaries and makes the nerves numb.
Ice packs are commonly used to alleviate the pain of minor injuries, as well as to reduce bruises after a blunt impact.
In the home, a simple plastic bag (or towel) filled with ice can be used. In an emergency, one can even use a packet of frozen vegetables to fulfil the same function.
