A stroke is defined as the swing and impact of a cane or other punishment device by an authority figure onto the human body of another person.

The use of a cane in a Judicial corporal punishment setting is quite severe, and in some countries considered a form of Martial Art. The number of strokes administered is usually determined by the severity of the offense. For example, in Singapore, healthy males under 50 years of age can be sentenced to a maximum of 24 strokes of a (rattan) cane on the bare buttocks; the punishment is mandatory for over 30 offenses.

The use of a cane in a session by an experienced Master or Mistress can elicit a wide range of physical and mental sensations ranging from enjoyment to severe pain, from anticipation to total panic.
