Francisque Poulbot (1879-1946) was a French artist who lived in Montmartre in Paris. His drawings of the ragged street children of the area were so popular that a “poulbot" came to mean a Parisian urchin.

Poulbot made several drawings that depict a martinet as the French implement of choice of his days for disciplining children.
