Nazi exploitation, also called Nazisploitation, is a World War II film genre produced mostly in Italy and France between 1975 and 1980. It is an offshoot of the violent "roughie" exploitation genre of the '60s and the later Women in Prison films (see that entry for more information).
Style and content
These films tend to be lurid, low-budget drive-in and grindhouse features in which female prisoners held in brutal Nazi-run brothels or concentration camps are sexually abused, punished, forced into slave labor or used for horrific medical experiments. Filmmakers such as Jess Franco and Sergio Garrone freely exploited well-known stories of Nazi atrocities as an excuse to wallow in every type of shocking and degrading misogynistic fantasy imaginable.
All of these films carry an underlying theme of dominance and submission, with sexually perverse commandants (and dominatrix-like female SS officers) indulging in cruel S&M scenarios that had never been seen in mainstream films.
With the harsh prison camp setting and the evil Nazis as villains, it was possible to depict all sorts of barbaric punishments, whippings, beatings, humiliations, bondage, sexual slavery, and so on.
History
The first hint of what was to come appeared in the critically-acclaimed film The Pawnbroker (1964). A flashback to a Nazi concentration camp depicts the sexual humiliation of female prisoners in a brothel (photos). This was one of two scenes with brief nudity that ignited much controversy and debate over the censorship of mainstream films. However, the exceptional artistic merits of the film won out and led to the demise of Production Code censorship in American cinema.
Notorious for its lack of artistic merit, the first Nazisploitation film was Love Camp 7 (1968), an obscure grindhouse feature with frequent nudity, forced prostitution, simulated rough sex, and an intense and explicit belt-spanking scene (video). The over-the-top style, violence, and theme of sexual slavery was inspired by the lurid cover illustrations seen on men's pulp magazines such as Man's Story, Men Today, World of Men, and Man's Epic (photos).
This was followed by the even more obscure Torture Me, Kiss Me (1970), about Nazi abuses in occupied France. This forgotten film includes two fetishistic female whipping scenes (photos, video). It was not until 1974 with the release of the surprise hit Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS that the concept took hold and became an actual film genre. Ilsa, about a SS prison camp dominatrix (played by Dyanne Thorne), includes scenes of graphic torture, rape, and a male and female prisoner flogged to death (review, photos). The movie spawned three sequels and dozens of imitators such as She Wolf of Spilberg (1979, video).
Some of the more notable films with fetishistic whippings of women include:
- SS Experiment Camp, aka SS Experiment Love Camp (1977)
- SS Extermination Camp, aka Women's Camp 119 (1977), video
- Gestapo's Last Orgy, aka Caligula Reincarnated as Hitler (1977), video clip
- Achtung! The Desert Tigers (1977); female prisoner whipped (video) and masochistic female commandant is breast-whipped.
- Fraulein Devil, aka Captive Women 4', Elsa: Fraulein SS and Fraulein Kitty (France, 1977), Malisa Longo, photos
- Convoy of Girls, aka Convoi de filles (France, 1978), video
- Helga, She Wolf of Stilberg (France, 1978), Malisa Longo, F/F flogging
- Nathalie: Escape from Hell (France, 1978), photos, video
The uncut European version of Train spécial pour SS aka Helltrain, Love Train for the SS, Hitler's Last Train (France, 1977), features two fetishistic spanking scenes. First, a German officer whips a masochistic prostitute with his riding crop as a form of sexual foreplay. (This scene is often deleted from export prints.) There is also a brief pony play segment with another officer pony-riding a girl and smacking her with his glove (video). The other major scene occurs when partisans capture the train and give one of the prostitutes a vigorous over-the-knee hand spanking (an especially long scene edited down in some prints; see video). A female German officer is also humiliated and spanked on all fours while being ridden like a pony. (See video clips.)
Private House of the SS, aka Casa privata per le SS, Private House of the SS Girls, SS Girls (1977), in a special Nazi brothel, selected prostitutes are used to spy on high-ranking German officers. They are trained in every sexual perversion including bondage and S&M. There are scenes of M/F, F/F, and F/M whippings (photos).
Blitzkrieg: Escape from Stalag 69 (2008) is a more recent semi-camp homage to the sub-genre with the usual ingredients (nudity, torture, whippings, etc.).
No Escape (2008), partly inspired by Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS, is from BoundHeat, a company that specializes in slickly-produced, R-rated lesbian S&M sexploitation films (trailer).
