Talkers are a means of real-time, text-based communication that pre-dated the advent of Instant Messaging. They differ from those systems in that there is no central authority or database of users. Bob on one Talker might not be the same person as Bob on another. They, like MUDs, are a form of the online virtual world to which multiple users are connected at the same time to chat in real-time. People log into the talkers remotely (usually via telnet), and have a basic text interface with which to communicate with each other, in a similar way to how MUDs work, but without the games, although some talkers have added simple games, some even almost as detailed as the games that exist in MUDs.

The first talker, UNaXcess, appeared in 1984.

Most talkers are free and based on open-source software.

Many of the online metaphors used on talkers, such as rooms and residency, were established by these early pioneering services and remain in use by modern 3D interfaces such as Second Life.
