About

Soaplands came into existence after the laws of 1956 when explicit full-service prostitution was outlawed in the country. To skirt these laws the operators changed their ways and continued operating their existing brothels as bathhouses which still exist to this day.

Permits allowing Soaplands to operate are no longer issued and can only be bought out by existing permit holders. In the early decades of its existence, many Soaplands went out of business overnight as the permits were only valid if the person responsible was still alive. This resulted in many owners transferring their licenses to operate to a dummy company so the fate of the establishment wouldn't be on the shoulders of one individual.

One example is the abandoned, still standing Soapland "Queen Chateau" in Ibaraki.

As the buildings of these brothels operate cannot be rebuilt or have any form of structural renovations done that alter the original floor plan they are mostly structurally questionable. Most Japanese buildings are demolished and rebuilt regularly to conform with the latest building regulations that protect them from major earthquakes.

Let's just say you wouldn't want to be in a Soapland when the next big earthquake hits!

Many of the touch-ups you see today are simply band-aid cosmetic fixes to the building. Retiling of the exterior with shiny new material is a commonly done renovation to attract the attention of passerby. One great example is the "New Fuyajyo" in Oomiya, Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo. As you can see by the picture linked the brothel has been designed to look like an Edo period castle.

The three most notable Soapland districts in Tokyo's vicinity are Yoshiwara, Kawasaki, and Oomiya.

Many operators in these districts start off with one brothel and slowly eat up their competitors as old-generation operators struggle to compete with new tech-savvy owners. These powerhouse brothels have an amazing support system in place for all staff members working at their establishments from free housing to three meals a day being provided. The merits of the job are broadcast over social networks as a recruitment tool for an industry that is taboo to work in.

Service Each individual service room will be fitted out with a full-length bed and an open bath with a range of lotions and tools to get you off. At extremely high-end Soaplands erotic services are provided upon initial contact with the sex worker in the waiting room with a meet and greet "Deep French Kiss". This is done in the vicinity of other patrons to arouse their senses while they wait for their chosen designated companion to arrive.

You will be whisked away to the service room where you will receive a unique Japanese sex act named "Shokushaku" which entails the sex worker giving you a bareback blowjob before showering. At this point, you can take your first shot and pace your 2nd and 3rd shots according to the service time you have paid for.

Each individual piece of clothing you take off will be neatly folded and put aside for the rest of the session. You will be directed to the bathing area where you will sit on top of a "Sukebe Isu" a standard bathhouse chair that you will find placed in front of the individual showering booths before and after you take a dip at a typical Japanese communal bath. What makes these chairs at a Soapland unique is the open-top from front to back. This tool was originally used at retirement homes so that caretakers could easily access the nether regions of the elderly when bathed. The water temperature will be carefully adjusted and you will be scrubbed top to bottom while engaging in erotic shower play.

From this point on the service can go anywhere, to the bed for some hot lovemaking or you can take it easy with a Nuru Nuru massage if an air mattress is available. This will be the basic Soapland routine that will be repeated 2 to 3 times until your stamina or time runs out.

On the way out the provider will hand you a business card with her details for future bookings and help you dress for your exit. You cannot freely walkout as it is customary to only have one patron walking through the corridors at a time for privacy reasons. Once you are given the go-ahead from the front desk to exit the provider will escort you out where you will be handed off to a male staff member. Depending on your reading /writing Japanese ability you will be given a survey to fill out about your session while you wait in the waiting room for your taxi or shuttle service to the nearest station if available.

Soap Girls

The girls in Soaplands are called Soap girls(ソープ嬢), companions, or princesses (formerly known as Turk girls).

Soap girls are usually limited to 20 years and over, but there are some regions where they are 18+. Because of the law, these places, including “Fashion Health” stores are not allowed to recruit people under the age of 18. There are many shops that hire amateurs and other veterans. In many cases, store managers will hire veteran girls to train amateurs in the fields of sexual services and “technology.” It should be noted that these amateurs are often called “Shinjin (新人),” and does not necessarily mean the girl is new to the Soapland scene, rather the service she provides can accommodate customers that like “pure” girls who are shy and sometimes submissive.

In principle, soap girls are managed by individual business owners. This is unlike AV actresses where they are managed through an agency. Soap girls are assigned a private room and to some extent is entrusted to the management. Linen, lubricant, drinks, condoms, and cigarettes are primarily the burden of the soap girls. Though these items are managed by soap girls, they are purchased by the store. If the soap girl buys anything of her own accord, the shop benefits and makes a profit from it. For example, the store only makes a profit from admission fees and if the soap girls perform well the likelihood of repeat and newcomers are likely to increase.

In luxurious Soaplands where customer rate is high, soap girls frequently get “high rewards,” whether it be cash incentives or something else. On the flip side, in lower-end shops, soap girls sometimes offer a “free” service charge to attract patrons. Though the service fee mostly, if not all, goes to the soap girls, these shops have a strict quota.

Male Employees

Male employees at Soaplands are considered to “work behind the scenes.” These employees include manager, store manager, valet, etc. The manager manages the work situation of both the male and female employees. The “chore boy” picks up and drops off customers in addition to cleaning.

In some instances where the area allows, male employees, will try to attract customers into the shop. Male employees associating with female employees is generally considered taboo.

Health Centers

Health centers regularly inspect Soaplands. Although each region is different, general inspection includes a water quality check, luminance check on lighting, and general facility and sanitary conditions of the private rooms. Violators that try to cover up these faults are punished.

In principle, because contraceptives used for sexual purposes are not supposed to be in the room, shops are usually given a written warning or suspension of business upon inspection but usually get ignored.

Air mats are also taboo. Upon inspection, they are usually hidden in the roof, and at times where there are unannounced inspections; they are quickly torn up with a knife and hidden in places like the storage room or bathtubs.

In Yoshiwara, inspection usually occurs during business hours but in places like Shinjuku, the inspection often occurs during non-business hours. In the event where inspection occurs during business hours and a male customer and soap girl are not naked with no genitals showing and the girl is simply giving a massage, then no action will be taken.

Tools

Soaplands have tools that may be unique to the common foreigner.

Sukebe

A sukebe or sukebe chair is a contraption that looks like a stool or chair. One easy way to identify one is there should be a hole in the middle of it where you sit. When sitting in the chair, it makes it easy for the girl to wash your butthole because there is a hole for her to put her arm through.

Wicket Chair

A wicket chair, or kuguri chair is similar to the sukebe but the hole is bigger. This is so that the girl can do more lewd things to you that you typically cannot do with a sukebe. For example, a girl can put her head through the wicket and lick your butthole while sitting down. It may not look stable but the ones that are high priced are usually clear, and although bendable, should not break.

Gold Chair / Pink Chair

Sitting in this chair allows for girls to easily get access to your whole body. This is an insanely shaped chair that serves the same purpose as a sukebe and wicket chair. The difference here is not only the shape but because the way it conforms allows the person to lay down on it to get serviced in various different ways. There is typically no “correct” way to sit in this chair, just lie back and let the girl please you in different ways. These chairs, although called gold chairs and pink chairs, are not always that color. Sometimes there is a second chair that accompanies a gold chair for the girl to lay down on, where typically the man lies on the bigger one, and the girl lies on the second one which is lower in height that slides underneath the taller one. Not all Soaplands have this.

Bathtub

All Soaplands are equipped with a bathtub. High-class and luxurious Soaplands have bigger bathtubs, some coming with handrails for customers to grab on to. Like onsens and other Japanese bathing places, it is customary to wash before entering the tub. Many Soaplands will also have a mat, towel, or some kind of cushion on the back for people to lie their heads down while bathing.

Bed

By law, not all places are allowed to have a bed; instead, it will be some kind of mattress covered with towels. Real bed or not, it acts just like a functional bed for customers to do their business.

Lubricant / Lotion

Unlike typical lubricant you may use at home, this lubricant is a little different, typically used on the mat for “mat play.” It is rubbed on the whole body with Soap girls gliding through their customers giving them a massage, infamously known as the nuru massage. Some of these lubricants are supposedly good for the skin.

Jelly

Unlike the aforementioned lubricant, this jelly is a mucous-like substance to protect from pain during sexual intercourse.

Steam Bath / Sauna

Not a full room sauna, but the ones normally used only for the face. Because of rules and regulations, not all Soaplands have this; otherwise, it would be licensed as a sauna and the shop could not function as a Soapland. Shielding

By law, Soaplands are required to have some kind of window to look into the private rooms, usually the door with a window. To maintain privacy, Soaplands usually cover the door up with a towel, sometimes plastic or paper – this is called shielding.

Air Mat

== Mat used for “lotion play” or lubricant.

Forbidden Acts == All Soaplands are different but usually have a similar set of rules:

  • No doing things the escort may not like
  • No secretly recording audio and no secretly filming or taking pictures
  • No requesting dates outside of the shop
  • No scouting or recruiting the girls to another shop
  • No asking the girls for their phone number, E-mail address or any personal contact information
  • No drunks
  • Nothing that will cause a nuisance to the shop or other patrons
