Master/slave training

Master/slave training is just that. It involves the training of BOTH the Master and the slave.

In the Leather community, a Master begins his or her training as a slave. In the military, an officer starts their training as someone who follows orders of their upper-classmen. Until they learn to follow orders, they are not given an opportunity to give orders.

One of the more important lessons taught is how to phrase an order so that it can not be misunderstood.

Consistency

When training a slave or a pet, it is important that all commands be consistent.

Consider the commands I use in training Champion Irish Setters

  • Come
approach me and sit facing me
  • Down
Lay down on the floor
  • Fetch
Retrieve an object thrown or pointed to
  • Halt
Stop where you are
  • Heel
Walk with me - be on my left hand side, along side or just behind me
  • Lead or Leash
approach me and sit facing me
  • Off
Get off the furniture
  • Sit
Sit on your butt, but front legs extended
  • Stack
Stand on all four feet - feet just outside your body profile (for judging)
  • Stand
Stand on all four feet - feet directly below shoulders

Following commands are in Japanese so dog will not follow orders of another person

  • Keibiin (Guard in Japanese}
guard me, or the area around me
  • Kougeki (Attack in Japanese)
Attack person I point to
KISS - Keep it short and simple!

Single word commands tend to avoid misunderstandings. A very good example is when your dog jumps upon the sofa. Most people will yell a command to "get down". Since a "down" command instructs the dog to lay down, they follow that order and lay down. This brings forth a repeat of the command from the owner. The dog hunkers down and becomes permanently attached to the sofa, which requires the owner to repeat the command, or grabbing the dog by the scruff of the neck, they drag the dog from the sofa. If the original order had been "off", the command would not have been misunderstood and dog and owner would have been happier.

"The Rules"

  • Do nothing unless directed
Unless specific order to do something, the slave goes "inactive" until given the next command.
  • Do nothing without permission
The slave is allowed minimal freedom, but they must ask permission to do anything. Unless they can get permission from the Master, they are not allowed to do the next task. It also means that the slave is continuously interrupting the Master to ask permission.
  • Follow the "house rules to the letter"
In this case, the slave may do anything that is on a proscibed list of specifically allowed tasks.
  • Do anything that does not violate the rules
The slave is expected to have a smattering of free will, and is allowed to do anything that is not against a list of specific prohibitions.

A Personal Note from Robin

While in the Navy, I was sent to a school to learn how to give orders. "Wash the dishes" does not address which dishes, when they are to be washed, or where, or other variables.
