Lions, sketch by Frans Koppelaar (1980).

A sketch is a rough and quickly made drawing.

Sketching is very important in drawing because it allows the artist to capture the concept of a drawing that he/she sees or that comes to his/her mind without caring about details or too great correctness.

A sketch can be refined later into a final drawing or painting. The sketch can be made on the same paper or canvas as the final work, or can be made on a separate sheet of paper, e.g. a sketch pad.

Sketching is usually done with a soft pencil or charcoal. However some artists also use ink, watercolors, or other drawing tools for sketching.

Sketches are usually not published, but when they are, it is usually very interesting because it reveals the creative process that lead the artist to the final work.
