"Oh, what a party

Ray Engel ( ?? - † February 1, 2011) held a series of "Bondage, Leather and Fetish Parties" at several venues around the Los Angeles area the early 1970's.

On several occasions, the members and staff of BackDrop would load up our cars with costumes, props and "fetters of all forms". We would leave Saturday morning and drive to Los Angeles. We checked into a hotel near the party site, take short naps, take showers and get dressed for the event. We often meet with many of our southern California friends and members for an informal dinner party at the hotel. We would then go to Ray's party where I would do several demonstrations of bondage techniques and interviews with publications such as "Fetish Times" and many of the "Men's Magazines" of the day. The highlight of the evening would be the stage presentations. Various ProDom's and scene-oriented companies would take the stage to introduce themselves or describe their products or services.

If we met an interesting single or couple, Candy and I invited them to return to our hotel for an "after-party play party", seldom getting to bed before early morning.

Sunday morning, we would load up our caravan and head back to the Hayward clubhouse. We would unload the cars fall into bed and get up Monday morning for a regular workdays.

Robin and Candy

The above photo was taken at the same party. It shows me in "stylin' black shirt and white pants" tying Candy (the lady in the chic white, bikini bathing suit) with webbing. Two items of note, for those keeping track of things historical, the photo shows a gold Staff key hanging around my neck, and it illustrates the fact that I was using tubular webbing at least as far back as the early 1970's.

Another magazine then copied the original photo (that did not have text on it) to illustrate an different article called the "Phatt Pharm" for a different magazine. The text in yellow was left in place for historical accuracy.

These days, Ray Engel is still hosting parties. His website says:

CALL THE PARTY HOTLINE (323) 960-2000 anytime to get the latest listing of events. Listings change daily. My personal service of sharing information about parties with you is for 2 months. Within 2 months, I have over 40 Events with Free Admission/Free Food/Free Drinks for you and a guest. (6-8 free events weekly.) I WOULD HOPE YOU WOULD AGREE THAT TWO MONTHS WORTH OF PARTIES FOR $100 IS CHICKEN FEED. Many of these parties are gatherings money can't buy ---- it is a matter of me sharing my knowledge inside my head. Try buying a couple of admissions to something, and some food, and a few $7 cocktails for you and a guest, and see how far $100 gets you. If you want my service, mail a $100 check with your phone + 10 self-addressed stamped envelopes to also send you many free passes, free tickets, and free invitations for you and a guest. If you want to come here and join with $100 cash, you'll immediately get over 20 invitations to free events; plus extra free tickets, free passes, and free gifts. LET ME SHOW YOU TO THE BEST TIME YOU'VE EVER HAD IN YOUR LIFE!!!

By the way, I will be happy to give you the information for any events from my hotline for any 2 full days for $10, or you can try my hotline for a week for $25. Obviously, the better bargain is 2 full months for $100. In this economy, believe it or not, some people actually pay more than $5 just for parking for an event. Or, some people pay more than $5 for a beer, wine, or cocktail. So, if you would like to go to a very, very nicely catered event with a plentiful buffet of gourmet food; and enjoy an open bar of beer, wine, cocktails, or soft drinks; and mingle with pleasant people who are also enjoying the party, then is it worth $5 to you for the entire evening for yourself and a guest? In fact, you could bring extra guests to the event. In one week, there will be at least 6-8 events. As a member, first you call the hotline and make your notes, then you ask me for whatever information you want on events at my direct line. By the way, I'd be happy to swap parties with you complimentary, at any time. Let me know. RAY ENGEL, 1730 Camino Palmero, L.A., CA 90046. (2 blocks W. of La Brea, N. of Hollywood Blvd.) Direct Line (323) 850-5411 M-F 4-6pm.
