Descriptions of various articles of horse or pony tack, equipment and saddles.

Saddle

Saddles are seats for the rider, fastened to the horse's back
Saddle accessories
  • Breastplate or breastcollar
Prevents saddles of all styles from sliding sideways or backward on a horse's back
  • Surcingle
strap that fastens around a horse's girth area.
used on horses and other equids to keep a saddle, harness or other equipment from sliding forward.
  • Breeching, also called "britching"
horse tack that allows a horse or other equine to pull various horse-drawn vehicles such as a carriage, wagon or sleigh.
  • Saddle blanket or numnah
refers to blankets, pads or fabrics inserted under a saddle to absorb sweat, cushion the saddle, and protect the horse's back.
Stirrups
supports for the rider's feet that hang down on either side of the saddle.
Headgear
straps around the horse's head, and are used for control and communication with the animal.

(or headstall) buckles around neck and head allowing horse to lead or guided
  • Bridles
buckles around the head, a bit-less bridle, used while riding

Reins
leather straps connected to each side of a bit, bridle or hackamore and held in riders hands to communicate direction commands to the horse.
Bit
device place in mouth of pony/horse by way of headstall to assist in communicating with the pony/horse
Harness
a device or set of straps that attaches to a cart, carriage, sledge or any other load
Breastplates
devoce to keep the saddle from moving
Martingales
device to keep pony/horse from lifting their head to high
Associated accoutrements
Bell boots
Bell boots, or overreach boots, are a type of protective boot that encircle the horse's ankle, and protect the back of the pastern and the heels of the animal.
