Langenhäuser Schuldisciplin (1795) - an example of historic school discipline illustrations found on Pictura Paedagogica Online.

Pictura Paedagogica Online is a German free website that features a searchable keyword-indexed archive of illustrations related to the history of education.

The material (a total of over 50,000 images) covers book illustrations from the middle ages up to the 19th and early 20th centuries. The majority of illustrations are from Germany.

The site has one of the Web's biggest collections of historic spanking art (besides the Spanking Art wiki) and provides a good impression of the history of European education, society, schooling, child-rearing, and punishment, in particular corporal punishment. Try search keywords such as "Strafe" (punishment) or "Rute" (birch).

For galleries with images from this site, see School corporal punishment (antiquity-1699) and School corporal punishment (1700-1899).

The images in the archive are all public domain due to their age and can be used freely. Higher resolution versions (300 dpi) are available for a fee.

Pictura Paedagogica Online was launched in 2000 as a joint project of Bibliothek für Bildungsgeschichtliche Forschung (BBF) des Deutschen Instituts für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung (DIPF) and Institut für Angewandte Erziehungswissenschaft und Allgemeine Didaktik der Universität Hildesheim.
