The first Petroleum Club started in the early 20th century in the oilfields of east Texas; the purpose of the club was to bring together colleagues and competitors on neutral ground. Over the past 100 years, the original idea for a social forum has grown into an informal network of clubs around the world.

There are now "Petroleum Clubs" all over the world-some of which have nearly nothing to do with Petroleum aside from their history.

Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have an exclusive frequent flyer program aimed at energy industry professionals called the Petroleum Club Card.
