As it applies to the BDSM scene, a munch is a low-pressure gathering for people involved in, or interested in, BDSM, usually at a restaurant. People are free to arrive and leave within the specified hours. The purpose is socializing.

Unlike a play party, a munch is meant to be a casual affair, without dominant/submissive roles, fetish attire or play. These are especially suited for novices who may feel intimidated by play events. Although some people meet partners at a munch, it is considered extremely bad form to hit on women, single or otherwise, at a munch. However, it is a good way to make friends within the BDSM scene.

--- In the early 90's, occasionally there were informal dinner gatherings of Bay Area folk into SM. Sometime around April, 1992, a lady named STella who posted regularly to the Usenet newsgroup, alt.sex.bondage, posted an article to the group saying she would be at Kirk's (a hamburger take-out restaurant) in Palo Alto, California that evening, and that anyone wishing to join her was welcome.

She felt that it would be useful to have a regular weekly predictable get-together, so that folks would not have to remember which day, what location, but could just head on over to the same place at the same time every week. Several people did show up that night and hence the concept of the Munch was born.

That particular munch is long gone (as is Kirk's), but its direct "descendant" is held at a Sunnyvale location every Wednesday evening.
