Martyr of Fanaticism

José de Brito {✦1855 Viana do Castelo - 1948 Porto[Note 1]) stood out for his historical paintings and portraits. His work is part of the naturalist proposals, dedicating himself, especially to the genre, landscape, and decorative painting, obtaining some recognition in the exhibitions of the Salon de Paris.

He began his studies at the Porto Academy of Fine Arts in 1873, having as masters João Correia, António Soares dos Reis and Tadeu de Almeida Furtado. D. Fernando II financed his stay in Paris by granting him a royal scholarship in 1885. He attended the Académie Julien and had Lefèbvre, Boulanger, Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant as teachers. After the monarch's death, he had the support of the state, which later paid for his eleven-year stay in the French capital with small works of art.

In this period of intense production, he participated in several Salons, since 1888, with significant works such as Easter Day and Portrait of Mme JC (1889); Où est-tu Lili? (1890), (later acquired by King D. Carlos); Jem'amuse (1892); Au coin du feu (1893); and Portrait of Mr. Jules Chawin (1894). The painting sent the following year, Martyr of Fanaticism (1895), manifestly anti-clerical, was awarded and received favorable reviews. His last participation in the Salon took place in 1896 with the work Portrait of a Lady, clearly naturalist.

Between 1896 and 1929, a period of essentially academic activity, he successfully participated in several exhibitions. He won the medal of honor at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and was represented in the exhibitions of the Ateneu Comercial, the National Society of Fine Arts, and in a solo show, with 42 works, at the Silva Porto Salon, in 1928.
